Head Teacher Blog: Friday 8th November 2019

Date: 8th Nov 2019 @ 2:50pm

This week we have been thinking a lot about Remembrance Day in Collective Worship and the sacrifices that many soldiers and their families have made over the years during war and conflict to help to keep us safe and restore peace. We also thought about a couple of the various charities that help to support the soldiers, such as the British Legion, and some of the things that they do. We shared the bible verse: For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. (Matthew 25:35-36) and talked about the fact that whenever you do something to help someone else, you are also doing it for God.

Thank you for all your support with the British Legion’s annual poppy appeal. When we know how much we have raised, we will let you know.

In our No Outsiders Collective Worship, we listened to Cyndi Lauper’s ‘True Colours’ and read a story called ‘Be Who You Are’ by Todd Parr. We discussed that everybody is different, whether that be for example, through disabilities, age, sexuality or gender but that it is important to be who you are and let your true colours shine through.  We also referred to our school bible verse: Let you light shine before others (Matthew 5:16) and how we can be ourselves and do good to others.

If you would like to have a look at the story we read, you can find it on this link being read by the author: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0H8WEpS4jg

Thank you!

We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to Fowles Funeral Services for a very generous charity donation that we have received this week.

Mr Fowles went to Kenya on 22nd September to climb Mount Kenya, which at 5000m, is Africa’s second highest mountain. Two main charities were chosen: Teenage Cancer Trust and Starlight Children’s Foundation as Mr Fowles’ friends had lost their 16 year old son, Josh, to cancer earlier in the year and these two charities helped them greatly. In total, £7500 was raised for these charities. In addition to this, Mr Fowles also chose to support Over St. John’s and, boosted by families who have lost loved ones and from Fowles Funeral Services, we have received a very generous donation of £560. This is much appreciated and as a school, we are going to use it to buy more reading books for the children.

If you would like to take a look at Mr Fowles’ journey, a video in two parts can be found on YouTube and there is a photograph below.

Harvest Donations

We received the following e mail from the Mid Cheshire Food bank yesterday:

‘On behalf of Mid Cheshire Foodbank, may I take this opportunity to thank you all for your kind donations of 105.9kgs of food from your Harvest celebration. Your support is appreciated as it maintains our ongoing commitment to serve the local community.
The year 2018/ 2019 was busier than ever for us so the demand for food has increased greatly. Your donation therefore helps us to keep meeting the needs of individuals and families in crisis.’

Kitchen Assistant Vacancy

Sadly, Mrs Holloway our Kitchen Assistant, is having to leave us for personal reasons. She has been an asset to our kitchen team over the last year and will be greatly missed.

We use an outside provider, Edsential, for our catering and if you are interested in the role which is 10 hours per week at £9 per hour, it is advertised on their website. Please use this link: https://edsential.com/career/over-st-johns-ce-ka/

#WakeUpWednesday

FIFA is one of the biggest and most successful football games in the world. Children love the game due to the fact that they can play the role of their favourite players and compete against each other, both offline and online. It is easy to pick up and hugely addictive. What makes the game so popular? Why do children love it? However, the game is more than just playing football, with a number of additional features intended to enhance the gameplay. Download the guide below for what parents need to know about FIFA 20.
