Head Teacher Blog: School Closure and Key Workers

Date: 20th Mar 2020 @ 11:04am

Dear All,

You will now be aware that schools have been given the list of key workers for whom school will be open next week for childcare whilst you are at work. The most recent scientific advice on how to further limit the spread of COVID-19 is clear. If children can stay safely at home, they should, to limit the chance of the virus spreading.

That is why the government has asked parents to keep their children at home, wherever possible, and asked schools to remain open only for those children who absolutely need to attend.

It is important to underline that schools, colleges and other educational establishments remain safe places for children. But the fewer children making the journey to school, and the fewer children in educational settings, the lower the risk that the virus can spread and infect vulnerable individuals in wider society.

Schools are, therefore, being asked to continue to provide care for a limited number of children - children who are vulnerable and children whose parents are critical to the Covid-19 response and cannot be safely cared for at home.

We have spoken individually to the adults of any vulnerable children.

With regards to key workers, the guidance is very clear in 4.2 of (see link below) in which it states, ‘Children with at least one parent or carer who are identified as critical workers by the government can send their children to school if required.'

The office sent a message out first thing this morning with regards to key workers and it is important that the status of 'key worker' is not interpreted but that you should get confirmation from your your employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, your role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service. When you have done so, please contact the school office.

Furthermore, if there are weekdays when you are not at work, then it is expected that you keep your children with you where they are safest and for social distancing.

Can I be clear - school is closed to all other pupils who have not had confirmation from school that they are able to attend from Monday. Can I also be clear - this is about social distancing and protecting the vulnerable. Everyone should remain in the family home and not use grandparents for childcare during this time.

Look after yourselves and each other,
