Another Busy Week of Learning in Linmere
It has been another busy and exciting week in Years 4 and 5, with the children continuing to show enthusiasm, creativity and teamwork across the curriculum. It has been wonderful to see so many of them letting their light shine through their ideas, perseverance and support for one another.
English – Exploring the Ancient Greeks
In English, we have started our new book on the Ancient Greeks. The children explored Greek friezes, looking carefully at the images and thinking about the stories behind them. They shared thoughtful ideas about what might be happening in the scenes, who the figures could represent, and how these link to Greek myths and daily life. It has been fantastic to see their curiosity and imagination grow as they engage with this new topic.
Maths – Developing Our Understanding of Decimals
In Maths, we have continued our work on decimals, focusing on rounding and understanding the positioning of decimal numbers. The children are becoming more confident in recognising the value of each digit and we will soon be moving on to adding and subtracting decimals. Their determination and willingness to tackle new challenges has really stood out this week.
Science – Plant Reproduction
In Science, we explored the different ways that plants can reproduce without pollination. The children learned about three methods and discussed how new plants can grow in different ways.
🌱 1. Bulbs
- Bulbs grow underground and can produce new plants from themselves.
- Over time, small new bulbs (called offsets) grow around the original.
- These can develop into new plants.
✅ Examples: onions, tulips, daffodils
🌿 2. Runners (or Stems)
- Some plants send out long stems (called runners) that grow along the ground.
- New plants grow at points along the runner and can take root.
✅ Example: strawberry plants
🌾 3. Tubers
- Tubers are thick underground stems that store food.
- New plants can grow from buds (often called “eyes”) on the tuber.
✅ Example: potatoes
They showed great interest in how living things reproduce and asked some thoughtful questions, deepening their understanding of the natural world.
Music – Bringing Stories to Life
In Music, the children explored how music is used in films to create atmosphere and emotion. They then applied this learning by creating their own sound scores to accompany a comic strip. This was a fantastic opportunity for creativity, and it was wonderful to see the children working together, experimenting with sounds and letting their light shine through performance and imagination.
Art – Birds and Nature
We have also begun our new Art topic, focusing on birds and nature. The children explored how different artists have represented these themes and began by practising drawing nests. This will lead into exploring wax resist techniques and eventually building their own structures later in the project. The children showed great care and attention to detail in their work.
Reminder from last week's blog
Art – New Project
We are also excited to be starting a new art project over the coming weeks. For this, we will need lots of natural and recycled materials, including different twigs and sticks of varying lengths and thicknesses, as well as pieces of recyclable materials. If you are able to, please could you start collecting these items at home and send them into school. The children are really looking forward to creating something special together!
HappyMinds – Putting Learning into Practice
We have now concluded our' HappyMinds' unit on “Meet the Brain”. The children have developed a strong understanding of how their brain works and will now begin to put these strategies into practice in the coming weeks. This will help them manage their emotions, stay focused, and continue to thrive both in and out of the classroom.
Quick Home‑Learning Reminders
A few regular routines make a big difference to your child’s learning.
📚 Reading
Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.
✖️ Times Tables
Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.
✏️ Spellings
Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom.
We are incredibly proud of the children for their continued effort, positivity and willingness to try new things. It has been another fantastic week of learning—well done to everyone! 🌟
