We’ve had another busy and exciting week in Year 4 and 5, with lots of hands‑on learning across the curriculum.
DT
In Design and Technology, we launched our new project: making a kite. This week, children explored different kite designs and discussed suitable materials, identifying the key parts of a kite and learning how each part helps it to fly. Pupils were especially interested in how air movement creates lift, and they are looking forward to beginning the making process in the coming weeks.
English
In English, we have been developing our sentence‑level writing skills by learning how to use brackets to add extra information for the reader. Alongside this, children have been gathering and organising facts about the many different species that live in the coral reef, building their knowledge ready for future writing tasks.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about perimeter. The children practised measuring and calculating the total distance around shapes, using their efficient addition strategies to add lengths together accurately. It was great to see them applying their calculation skills confidently.
PE
During PE, we continued working with Mr Burgess to develop our hockey skills. The focus this week was on teamwork and communication, with pupils practising passing, positioning and working effectively as a team.
Science
This week our scientists have been exploring two fascinating forces: air resistance and water resistance. We talked about how both forces act against movement, slowing objects down as they travel through air or water. The children loved thinking of real‑life examples.
History
In History, we travelled all the way back to Ancient Greece to discover how the very first Olympic Games began. The class noticed how much more international and varied the Olympics are today, but also how the spirit of celebration and athletic achievement has stayed the same for thousands of years.
RE
In RE, we explored Humanism and what it means to live a happy, meaningful life. We talked about the importance of being kind, making thoughtful choices and helping others. To finish, the children created their own ‘Happy Human’ symbols, reflecting what brings them joy.
We have also begun preparing for our Easter service. Each child has been given a line to learn, and we are starting to practise speaking clearly and confidently as part of a group.
Quick Home‑Learning Reminders
A few regular routines make a big difference to your child’s learning.
📚 Reading
Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.
✖️ Times Tables
Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.
✏️ Spellings
Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom
Well done to everyone for their enthusiasm and hard work this week – we’re very proud of how the children are approaching their learning.
