π History
This week, the children have been learning all about Alexander the Great. They learnt who he was, why he is such a significant historical figure, and how his leadership helped shape the ancient world. Next week, we will be moving on to explore schools in Ancient Greece, comparing what education looked like then to life in modern classrooms.
π RE
In our Religious Education lessons, the children have been learning about the important Islamic duty of Zakat ul-Mal which is the act of charitable giving. Next week, we will begin exploring Sawm, the practice of fasting during the month of Ramadan, and why it holds such meaning for Muslims around the world.
π¬ Science
This week in Science, we investigated the seasons and how the Earth’s movement around the Sun affects the changes we see throughout the year. Next week, we’ll be delving into how night turns into day, learning about Earth’s rotation and the effect it has on light and darkness.
In PSCHE this week, Year 5 children have been learning an important first aid skill: the recovery position. They discussed why this position helps to keep someone safe if they are unconscious but breathing, and they enjoyed working in pairs to carefully practise the steps. The children showed great teamwork, responsibility, and care as they learned how to help someone in an emergency. Why not see if the children can remember the steps!
Steps for the Recovery Position
- Make sure the area is safe – check for any dangers around the person.
- Kneel beside them and gently place the arm closest to you at a right angle to their body.
- Bring their other arm across their chest and place the back of their hand against their cheek.
- Bend the knee furthest away from you so their foot is flat on the floor.
- Gently roll them onto their side by pulling the bent knee towards you.
- Tilt their head back slightly to open their airway.
- Make sure they are stable and stay with them while you get help.
Enjoy the weekend. Fingers crossed it isn't too cold!
