Linmere Class Blog 24.04.26

Date: 24th Apr 2026 @ 5:44pm

Welcome back, Year 4 and 5! We hope you all had a restful and enjoyable Easter break. It has been lovely to see everyone return with smiles, enthusiasm, and ready to let their light shine in the classroom once again.

English

In English, we have been busy exploring ambitious vocabulary to describe Ken Nedimyer, the inspiring coral conservationist, and thinking carefully about how powerful words can help our writing shine. We’ve also been practising using singular and possessive apostrophes correctly, so our sentences are clear and accurate. Alongside this, we have been researching interesting and important facts about coral reefs. All this learning is helping us prepare to write an informative leaflet about protecting coral reefs, sharing our knowledge so it can let light shine before others.

Maths – Exploring 2D Shape

This week in Maths, we are moving on to our new topic of 2D shape. The children will be exploring the properties of different shapes, with a particular focus on triangles and quadrilaterals.

We will be learning to identify and describe:

  • The number of sides and vertices
  • Lines of symmetry
  • Parallel and perpendicular lines
  • Angles

The children are enjoying using mathematical language confidently and explaining their thinking, showing great teamwork and curiosity as they learn together.

DT – Building Our Kites

In Design and Technology, the children have been working in small groups to make their kites, using their plans to guide them. They cut wood to create strong frames and chose secure methods to join the parts together.

We talked about what makes a kite fly, including:

  • Keeping it lightweight so it can lift into the air
  • Making a strong frame to hold its shape
  • Using the right shape and balance so the wind can catch it
  • Ensuring joins are secure so nothing falls apart

The children worked collaboratively, listening to one another’s ideas and solving problems together, a lovely example of how we let our light shine by working as a team.

Science – Life Cycles

In Science, we have started our new topic on life cycles, beginning with the life cycle of a mammal. The children are learning about the different stages, from birth to adulthood, and how mammals grow and change over time.

They asked thoughtful questions and showed great interest in learning about the world God created, reflecting carefully on how living things develop and are cared for.

PSHE – KivA Session

We also had another important KivA session, where we continued learning about bullying. The children discussed how to recognise bullying, how to seek help, and how to be kind and supportive to others. These sessions encourage children to look after one another and help create a safe, caring community. This is another way we live out our school vision each day.

It has been a positive and purposeful first week back, and we are looking forward to another exciting week of learning ahead. Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

History- Anglo-Saxons

In History, we have begun our exciting new topic all about the Vikings by first looking at what life was like before they arrived. We have been learning about the AngloSaxons and exploring the seven kingdoms that made up Britain at the time. The children have enjoyed discovering what everyday life may have looked like, including homes, jobs, and communities. By understanding the past, we are learning how knowledge and curiosity can help us let our light shine through thoughtful discussion and respect for history.

RE – Mucknell Abbey

In RE, we have been focusing on the Christian belief that God created one world and that it is our responsibility to look after it. We have discussed how caring for the environment is an important way Christians can live out their faith. This week, we have also learned about the monks of Mucknell Abbey and the simple, respectful lives they led. Their example has helped us think about how our actions and choices can let our light shine before others as we care for God’s world.

Quick HomeLearning Reminders

A few regular routines make a big difference to your child’s learning.

📚 Reading

Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.

✖️ Times Tables

Regular timestable practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.

✏️ Spellings

Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Skelley and Miss Reid
