Year 4 & 5 Blog – What a Busy Week!
It’s been another wonderfully active and creative week in Years 4 and 5, filled with hands‑on learning, thoughtful exploration, and plenty of moments where children truly let their light shine. Across every subject, pupils have been encouraged to take God’s teachings and live them out, showing kindness, perseverance, curiosity and care for one another.
Science – Exploring Streamlined Shapes
This week in Science, the children investigated how streamlined shapes help objects move more smoothly through air and water. They designed sleek models and predicted which shape would create the least resistance, before testing them in water to see which travelled the fastest.
The children showed fantastic teamwork, listening carefully, sharing ideas respectfully, and celebrating one another’s discoveries.
RE – Understanding Humanist Beliefs
In RE, we learned about freedom of choice and belief, exploring why these ideas matter deeply to Humanists. The children discussed how Humanists make decisions using reason, kindness and a desire to live meaningful lives.
We had thoughtful conversations about how respecting other people’s beliefs, even when they differ from our own, helps create a kinder, more peaceful world. This connected beautifully to Jesus’ message of love and respect for all people. The children showed real maturity and empathy as they reflected on how they can shine God’s light through fairness, compassion and understanding.
PE – Growing Strength, Skill and Confidence
Our PE lessons were full of energy as the children continued practising a range of rolls, jumps and smooth gymnastic transitions. They worked especially hard on catsprings, showing brilliant determination and courage. As confidence grew, pupils supported one another through encouragement and praise.
Design & Technology – Designing Our Own Kites
This week in DT, the children explored the fascinating world of kite design. They examined different examples and discussed how materials, shape and structure affect flight.
Year 5 pupils also looked closely at the National Curriculum design criteria and considered:
- which materials are strong yet lightweight
- how the frame affects stability
- how to join materials securely
- how to improve a design after testing
The children showed excellent teamwork, sharing resources and motivating one another. By encouraging friends and celebrating each other’s creativity, they were truly shining their light by lifting others up and using their gifts to inspire.
The excitement is building as they prepare to make and test their own kites!
English – Diving Deeper Into the Coral Reef
Our underwater adventure continued this week as the children explored the vibrant world of the coral reef.
They used:
- modal verbs (might, could, should) to explore possibilities
- fronted adverbials (e.g. Beneath the shimmering waves…) to add depth and atmosphere
The children created richly descriptive writing, full of life and imagination. They also supported each other through thoughtful peer feedback, showing respect, encouragement and a shared desire to help everyone succeed.
Maths – Calculating Area Using a Formula
In Maths, Years 4 and 5 learned how to calculate area using the formula:
Area = length × width
The children applied this to rectangles and compound shapes, solved reasoning problems and explained their methods clearly. Their determination and support for one another were wonderful to see. Once again, they let their light shine, not only through accurate calculations, but through the patience, encouragement and perseverance they brought to their learning.
Quick Home‑Learning Reminders
A few regular routines make a big difference to your child’s learning.
📚 Reading
Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.
✖️ Times Tables
Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.
✏️ Spellings
Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom
🌟 What a joyful week of learning, discovery and shining brightly together!
