Linmere Class Blog 6.3.26

Date: 6th Mar 2026 @ 11:47am

We’ve had another wonderfully busy week here at Linmere, and the burst of sunshine has made everything feel even brighter. The children have loved being outdoors, and the good weather has brought an extra spark to our learning and our smiles.

English – Mastering Metaphors
This week in English, we continued to grow our poetry skills by exploring metaphors. At first, understanding what a metaphor really was proved to be a bit of a challenge—after all, saying “the classroom was a buzzing beehive” doesn’t literally mean bees have moved in!
But as the week went on, the children became much more confident. They practised interpreting metaphors in poems and even created some imaginative examples of their own.

Maths – Fractions
In Maths, we continued to build on our existing knowledge by applying previously taught skills to adding and subtracting fractions. We also began exploring fractions of numbers. Children with strong multiplication knowledge have particularly excelled in this area, showing great confidence when finding unit and non-unit fractions of amounts. It’s been wonderful to see their reasoning skills developing as they justify their methods.

Geography – Debating Fast Fashion
In Geography, we prepared for a structured debate around the question: “Is fast fashion good for the world?” The children worked in groups to prepare points for both sides of the argument. They devised thoughtful questions to challenge each other’s viewpoints and then used these during our class debate. The level of maturity, curiosity, and empathy shown in their contributions was fantastic to see.

Science - Gravity
In Science this week, we have been learning about gravity and the ideas of Isaac Newton and Galileo Galilei. We explored how their discoveries helped people understand why objects fall and how forces work. The children asked thoughtful questions and enjoyed testing their own ideas through investigations.

History- Greek Classroom
We zoomed back in time to Ancient Greece to find out what school was like long ago. We were shocked to learn that only boys went to school and that they had very strict teachers. The children loved practising writing their names using the Greek alphabet and imagining a day in a Greek classroom. We also discovered that many English words have roots in Ancient Greek, and the children enjoyed spotting familiar words linked to Greek origins.

RE - Big Bang
In RE, we have been learning about Humanism and different world views. We discussed how some people believe the universe began with the Big Bang. The class showed maturity and respect as they compared different beliefs and shared their own ideas.

PE - Gymnastics and Hockey
In PE, we have been developing our gymnastics skills. We practised a range of rolls, with a particular focus on backwards rolls and body control. It has been amazing to see the children grow in confidence and support one another as they improve. The children have also been developing their hockey skills in their PE lessons with Mr. Burgess (our new sports coach) We’ve been focusing on control, accuracy and teamwork and have been learning how to hold the stick correctly, move into space and make strong, purposeful passes.

World Book Day
For World Book Day, it was wonderful to see the children arrive in such bright and colourful clothes. The playground felt like a reading rainbow!  The day was a lovely reminder of how important reading is and how books can bring us together. We focused on the beautiful story 'The Green Ship' by Quentin Blake. The children created their own descriptions of a secret place, thinking carefully about atmosphere and detail. They then drew their own illustrations inspired by Quentin Blake’s distinctive style, filling the classroom with imagination and creativity.

🌟 Quick Home‑Learning Reminders

A few regular routines make a big difference to your child’s learning.

📚 Reading

Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.

✖️ Times Tables

Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.

✏️ Spellings

Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom

Have a great week everyone! 🌿✨
