🧠 Maths: Mental Strategies for Efficiency

Our focus in maths has been on developing mental maths strategies to help children solve problems more efficiently. We’ve explored different approaches such as:

  • Partitioning numbers to simplify calculations
  • Bridging to the nearest multiple of 10,100, 1000
  • Compensating

The children are learning to choose the most effective strategy depending on the problem they face. It’s all about recognising patterns and making smarter choices. It’s wonderful to see their confidence grow!

Why not ask your child to show you how they solve a tricky sum in their head?

✍️ English: Planning and Presenting Leaflets

In English, we’ve been exploring the features of information texts and learning how to present facts in a clear and engaging way. The children have been busy planning and producing leaflets about Jean-Michel Basquiat, an inspiring artist celebrated for his bold, expressive style and thought-provoking messages.

We’ve explored:

  • How to structure an information leaflet
  • Using headings, subheadings, and bullet points
  • Choosing engaging language and visuals

Ask your child what they found most interesting about Basquiat – you might be surprised by their insights! Take a sneak peek at the leaflet display below – this is just a small sample as you can see all the work for yourself at the Pupil Consultation Evenings next week!

🔬 Science: Reversible and Irreversible Changes

Science has been full of fizz and fun! We’ve been investigating reversible and irreversible changes in materials. One of the highlights was watching Mrs. Skelley mix bicarbonate of soda with vinegar.

Can you guess what happened? It also involved a balloon! (Hint: It bubbled and fizzed!)

Ask your child to explain why this is an irreversible change. They’ve learned some great scientific vocabulary to help them describe it.

Art
Our budding artists have made fantastic progress on their Boudicca cartoon strips this week! The creativity and storytelling have been brilliant, and we’re excited to see the final pieces completed next week. These will be proudly displayed in school—and we’ll share a photo on this blog so you can enjoy their work too!

History
In history, we’ve been comparing two fascinating figures from Roman Britain: Boudicca and Cartimandua. The children explored their leadership styles and decisions, and discussed why Boudicca is remembered more widely today. Ask your child what they think—some of their insights were really thoughtful!

RE
We’re coming to the end of our unit on Why Christians Worship. This week, we focused on the Parable of the Mustard Seed and how it links to the idea of God’s Kingdom. The children showed great understanding and reflection—well done to everyone!

Celebrations
👏 A huge congratulations to Ashton, Thea and Hudson for their Excellent Examples of work this week.
🌟 and a special shout-out to our Worker of the Week: Olivia Hyour effort and attitude have been outstanding!

🥪 School Council: Breaktime Snack Survey

Our budding researchers have also been helping the School Council by completing a survey on breaktime snacks. They’ve been thinking about:

  • Healthy choices
  • Popular preferences
  • How we can make breaktimes even better

We’re proud of their thoughtful contributions and look forward to seeing how their ideas help shape snack time at school.

👋 Looking Ahead: Pupil Consultation Evening

We’re really looking forward to seeing you at Pupil Consultation Evening next week. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate your child’s progress, share their achievements, and talk about the exciting learning ahead.

Thank you for your continued support – don’t forget to make sure you look over this week’s spellings with your child for their check on Monday.

We love sharing our learning journey with you and we hope this gives you a few conversation starters for the dinner table!

Warm wishes,

Mrs. Skelley and Mrs. Snowdon
