βοΈ This week in English, the children have worked incredibly hard to apply all the skills they've been learning over the past few weeks. We've focused on organising our writing into clear paragraphs, and it's been wonderful to see how confidently the children are using fronted adverbials, conjunctions, and even some modal verbs to add detail and variety to their writing.
π Reading – It’s been great to see more children working towards reading four times a week. Keep it up – regular reading makes a big difference!
𧩠In Spelling, we've been exploring how to add suffixes to root words. The children really enjoyed playing Spellcat – a fun and engaging game that's a bit like Hangman, helping them practise their spelling in a playful way.
π Just a quick reminder: Spelling tests are every Monday, so please encourage your child to keep practising at home.
π’ In Maths, we’ve finished up our Place Value unit and are now moving on to addition. To celebrate our learning, we took part in a Place Value Orienteering Challenge. It was a fantastic outdoor activity where pupils hunted for hidden numbers and then worked together to order, round, or partition them. It was wonderful to see teamwork, problem-solving, and fresh air all in one go!
π‘During our fluency sessions, we’ve been sharpening our knowledge of square facts. These are the numbers multiplied by themselves (e.g. 3 × 3 = 9). Can your child tell you their square facts up to 12 × 12? Why not challenge them at home or turn it into a quick-fire quiz at dinner?
π§ͺ In Science, we’ve been exploring the fascinating processes of evaporation and condensation. Using everyday examples, like puddles disappearing, steam on mirrors, and water droplets on cold drinks, we’ve investigated what’s happening and why. The children have impressed us with their scientific thinking and ability to explain these changes using key vocabulary. Next time you boil the kettle or hang out the washing, see if they can tell you which process is taking place!
π» Year 5 musicians continue to grow in confidence with their violin lessons. The sound of strings is becoming more tuneful by the week, and we’re already looking forward to their first concert!
πIn RE, we've been finding out about adult baptism and how it is a powerful personal choice, often made when someone wants to publicly declare their faith and start a new chapter in life. Life afterwards can feel more purposeful, with a deeper connection to community and spiritual growth. We drew little cartoon strips to show the adult's journey.
π We've been continuuing our History, looking more closely at why the Romans Invaded Britain. We know the Romans were drawn to Britain by its rich natural resources like tin, lead, and gold, as well as its fertile land for farming. Salt featured highly when looking at the natural resources that the Romans wanted so our hometown was obviously very important.
π€ Friendships & Teamwork – We’ve been working on building positive relationships and collaboration in class. We really value the children supporting one another, sharing ideas, and showing kindness in the classroom and in our community. Ask your child about the kindness chains that we began to make today to help us learn about the British Value of tolerance.
Workers of the Week
A huge congratulations to Charlotte, who was voted Worker of the Week by her peers last week! Her dedication, kindness, and hard work really shone through.
Furthermore, this week, we had not just one, but three amazing winners: Matilda, Thea, and Lily E – fantastic effort from all of you!
π Excellent Examples were shared by Beatrice, Olivia H, Lilly T last week and this week’s stars were Luca, Lily E, and Thea. Your contributions continue to inspire and set a brilliant example for others.
Keep up the great work, everyone – we’re proud of you!
Thank you, as always, for your support at home. We love sharing these learning moments with you and hope they spark some great conversations around the dinner table!
Have a great weekend,
Mrs Skelley and Mrs Snowdon
