Linmere Class Blog: Friday 7th November 2025
Date: 7th Nov 2025 @ 12:40pm
As we settle into the new half term, Year 4 and 5 have been diving into some exciting learning across the curriculum.
➕ Maths: Subtraction with Strategy
This week, we’ve been mastering column subtraction, building fluency and confidence with this written method. But we haven’t stopped there! Children have been reasoning about when column subtraction is the most efficient choice, and when a mental method might be quicker or more appropriate. We always encourage flexible thinking and choosing the best tool for the job. Why not challenge your child to explain when they’d use column subtraction versus a mental strategy?
🛡️ English: Viking Voices in Poetry
Our new English topic has taken us back in time to the age of the Vikings! We’ve begun exploring Viking poetry, thinking about how words can be used to create impact and atmosphere. Pupils have experimented with powerful vocabulary, vivid imagery, and dramatic phrasing to bring their writing to life.
🔊 Science: How Is Sound Made?
In science, we’ve been investigating the fascinating question: How is sound made? Through hands-on experiments, children have explored how vibrations travel through different materials and how pitch and volume can be changed. Ask your child to tell you about the experiments they did, especially the ones involving string telephones and tuning forks!
🕺 Dancing with Feeling! 💃
This half term in PE, Year 4 and 5 have been exploring the expressive world of dance. Our focus has been on how movement can show emotion—whether it’s joy, excitement, worry or wonder. Pupils have worked brilliantly in small groups to create short routines that tell a story through dance. From stomping superhero marches to gentle floating steps, each performance was unique and full of feeling.
We were so proud to see everyone perform their dances for the class with confidence and creativity. The teamwork, encouragement and imagination on display were fantastic. Who knows, perhaps we’ll have our very own version of Strictly Come Dancing by the end of the term!
🍕 Design & Technology: Healthy Pizza Creations! 🥦
In Design and Technology this term, we’re diving into the delicious world of pizza, with a healthy twist! Pupils have been learning how to design a balanced pizza by exploring nutritious options for the crust, sauce, and toppings. From wholemeal bases to veggie-packed sauces and colourful toppings like peppers, sweetcorn, and lean proteins, we’re thinking carefully about what makes a pizza both tasty and good for us. Over the next few weeks, the children will design and create their own healthy pizza, combining creativity with food knowledge and practical skills. We can’t wait to see and smell the results!
History: Roman Britain
As you know, we have been diving into the fascinating world of the Romans and imaging what it would be like to design a town of our own, inspired by Roman ideas.
The children began by exploring how the Romans shaped Britain: from the straight roads that still connect our towns today, to the architecture that influenced buildings for centuries, and even the names of places like Chester and Manchester, which trace back to Roman roots.
With this knowledge, they took on the exciting challenge of designing their own town. They thought carefully about layout and public spaces — just like Roman engineers did thousands of years ago. Some included amphiteatres and bathhouses!
Geography: Would you like to live in the desert?
We have started a new topic in our geography lessons where we are considering what it would be like to live in a desert. Today we recapped on biomes and the hot desert biome in particular. Some children shared some excellent prior knowledge and I was very impressed! We wrote some postcards home from the Mojave Desert - ask your child if they would like to live there!
Christmas has landed!
We started to learn our song for the Carol Service today and the children did a fabulous job - it is only day 1 - wait until you hear it!
Have a fabulous weekend and we look forward to seeing you all next week.
