Linmere Class Blog: Thursday 23rd October 2025

Date: 22nd Oct 2025 @ 1:16pm

It was wonderful to see so many of you at Pupil Consultation Evenings this week; we hope you enjoyed looking through the children’s books and celebrating their progress. They have all worked hard this term.

✍️ English: Playing with Poetry

This week,  we’ve been exploring poetry techniques in preparation for our next unit. From similes to metaphors, the children have been experimenting with language in creative and surprising ways. One of the highlights was inventing new ice cream flavours using alliteration! Think Marshmallow Mango Madness or Pickled Pineapple Popcorn! Mrs Skelley isn’t entirely convinced she’d like to try some of them!

➕ Maths: Crunching Bigger Numbers

In maths, we’ve been stretching our brains with more complex addition problems, ones that are too tricky for mental methods alone. Children have been learning to use column addition to keep their working clear and accurate, especially when the digits start stacking up! We always remind them to check first whether a mental strategy might work, but for these larger numbers, written methods are the best method. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow and their reasoning skills shine. Everyone has also been working hard on their times table fluency, and it’s really paying off.

Year 5 violins are sounding fantastic, especially their spooky new piece, Trick or Treat!

This week in our Year 5 KiVa lesson, we explored the importance of respecting everyone. The children had thoughtful discussions about what respect looks like in everyday life, especially at school, at home, and with friends. One of the highlights of the lesson was using a virtual number line to express opinions. The children placed themselves along the line to show how strongly they agreed or disagreed with different statements. It was a fun and interactive way to see how we all think differently. Everyone enjoyed sharing their views and listening to others. It was a great reminder that respecting others means valuing different opinions and treating everyone kindly. In our Year 4 KiVa lesson we looked at different examples of things that happen in school to decide if they are bullying or not bullying - it can sometimes be easy to label all things that happen as bullying when in actual fact, they aren't Ask your child if they can share some of the examples with you.

We have completed our art work this week, making a comic strip to tell the story of Boudicca. THe children did really well with limited media (pencil, graphite, biros and handwriting pens) to create atmospheric pictures. THey also had a flash of colour in the form of oil pastels for Boudicca's fiery hair! Take a look at the display in the link below. Aren't they fab?

Just a few reminders: please aim to read at least four times a week and log it online, and don’t forget that PE is on Tuesdays and Fridays.

As we head into half term, we hope you all enjoy a well-earned rest! Whether you’re off on adventures or relaxing at home, make the most of the fresh air if the weather is kind to us. A walk in the woods, a kickabout in the park, or simply spotting signs of autumn can be a lovely way to recharge. Whatever you get up to, stay safe, have fun, and we look forward to seeing your smiling faces after the break!
