Oakmere 24.6.20

Date: 24th Jun 2020 @ 2:39pm

Hello to our Oakmere family!

The sunshine is back - hooray! Although I have to say I have found it a little bit on the hot side today, but no doubt the rain will return soon enough, so we have made the most of it here in school.

We are having a nice week so far learning all about sea creatures, oceans and getting to grips with measuring in Maths. We've even had the clay out today to make some clay starfish which we will hopefully decorate next week. The children in school have also been very busy (and competitive!) on the TTRockstars games - have you noticed anyone challenging you on the Rockslam game? Maybe you would like to challenge a class mate or even me?! (I go by the name of Rhiannon Bullet!) Have a look in the 'mutliplayer' section along the top bar, select 'Rockslam' and you can then send challenges to other children in Oakmere (although it will be their rockstar name so you might not know who it is!). It would be great to see even more of you using the game as the children in school are making amazing progress with their tables as a result.

As well as times tables practice, it would be really beneficial for you all to keep reading everyday. To spur you on, the library have set up their Summer Reading Challenge - Silly Squad. You can sign up to the easy-to-use website and create your own profile at sillysquad.org.uk. Set your own challenge to read any amount of books during the Challenge. You can read anything that makes you happy – whether it be comics, joke books, poetry, stories or information; e-book or printed book, borrowed or bought. Each time you finish a book, you can add it to your profile and write a review. You are then rewarded with activities and incentives along the way, such as online badges, games and videos. You can join in and ‘Get Silly’ with downloadable activities, games, quizzes and more. There’s new stuff added to enjoy each week so the fun will continue throughout the summer. You’ll even get a downloadable certificate once you’ve completed their challenge. Also look out for the special Cheshire West and Chester Libraries website, to be launched soon, at www.chesterandchester.gov.uk/read. This will include events, all of which will be online, such as storytelling, animal handling and dance, as well as competitions and craft videos. There’s even be a section for terrible jokes.

As this time away from school and normality continues, it is important to look after our mental health. The NHS have released some resources which you may find useful and they are uploaded with this blog below.

We hope you are all getting on OK at home and keeping yourselves busy. If you need some motivation to get moving (and you've had enough of Joe Wicks!) this week is School Sports Week so you will find 2 daily challenges by following the link here. Mrs Starsiak has posted a separate blog with alternative ways of viewing the videos and you can send any attempts, scores, photos or videos via the social media platforms or via email to the school office (admin@overstjohns.cheshire.sch.uk) or to the VRSSP (chris.story@hartfordhigh.co.uk).

Sorry it was a lot to read this week! Most importantly, please remember that we miss you, we are thinking of you and we are here for you if you need us.

Mrs Riley smiley
