🌟 Oakmere Class Blog – Let Your Light Shine 🌟
After a slightly unusual week — with some of us enjoying an amazing residential and others engaging in creative art projects and learning in school — it will be so lovely to be back together again next week. As we step into our final week before half term, it feels like a perfect moment to celebrate all the ways our children continue to grow, shine, and do their very best each day.
Just a reminder to book your slot for parents’ evening next week — I’m really looking forward to sharing the wonderful work the children have been doing and the many ways their confidence and talents are shining through.
🌱 Science
This week in Science, we will be exploring how roots work to absorb water and nutrients from the soil and transport them around the plant.
The children will set up a simple experiment to observe how water travels through a plant over time. Through this, they will learn that roots act like tiny straws, soaking up water, while stems help move it upwards to nourish the whole plant.
As we study this process, we will also reflect on how, just like plants need the right conditions to grow strong, we too flourish when we are supported, encouraged, and given opportunities to shine.
✍️ English
In English, we continue reading Stone Age Boy, focusing on the section up to “I saw them…”.
The children will carefully study the illustrations, imagining they have stepped back in time. They will describe what they can see using past progressive tense, for example:
- The woman was stretching animal skin because she wanted to smooth it.
- The man was tying a flint onto a stick so that he could make a spear.
We will also explore how images and text work together to tell a story and introduce topic-specific vocabulary such as flint, bone, striking, and knapping.
Through discussion and writing, the children will be encouraged to express their ideas clearly and confidently — letting their voices and creativity shine.
➕ Maths
In Maths, we are continuing to practise the 9 times table, building both fluency and confidence — it’s wonderful to see how persistence helps the children shine brighter each day.
We are also beginning a new unit on fractions.
What are fractions?
Fractions show equal parts of a whole.
- A unit fraction has a numerator of 1 (e.g. 1/2, 1/4)
- A non-unit fraction has a numerator greater than 1 (e.g. 2/3, 3/4)
Examples:
- Unit: 1/4 of a pizza means one equal part out of four
- Non-unit: 3/4 means three out of four equal parts
Practical activities will include:
- Shading parts of shapes
- Sharing objects equally (e.g. sharing 8 sweets between 4 children)
- Solving simple problems such as:
- What is 1/2 of 10?
- What is 3/4 of 12?
Through hands-on learning, children will build understanding step by step — showing that with practice and perseverance, they can succeed and shine in maths too.
🏃 PE
Next week in PE, the children will be taking part in athletics with the sports coach as well as enjoying outdoor games with Mrs Kelly. They will also continue developing their skills in rounders, where the pupils will learn what a ‘no-ball’ is and they will begin to understand why fielders might move strategically after a strike. Throughout these activities, the children will work on improving their throwing skills and learn the importance of communication when working as part of a team. We will also focus on developing self-discipline, helping the children recognise how perseverance and teamwork allow them to grow in confidence and let their abilities shine both on and off the field.
✝️ RE
In RE, we will explore Christian artwork to help us understand the idea of Jesus as the Light of the World.
We will reflect on these readings:
“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
“I stand at the door and knock…” (Revelation 3:20)
We will also look at William Holman Hunt’s painting The Light of the World.
This learning helps children think about how light represents hope, guidance, and kindness — and how each of us can share our own light through the way we act, treat others, and do our best.
💭 PSHE
In PSHE, we will be exploring the emotion of grief.
The children will learn:
- How grief can affect our bodies
- How to recognise and understand these feelings
This is a sensitive and important topic, helping children develop empathy and emotional awareness. By understanding their feelings and supporting one another, they learn that even in difficult times, kindness and care allow their inner light to shine through.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support.
Have a lovely weekend — and remember, every child has their own unique light. It is a joy to see it grow brighter each day ✨
