🌟 What a Wonderful Week in Oakmere! 🌟
Wow! What a fantastic and hardworking week we've had in class. The children have truly impressed us with their enthusiasm, focus, and teamwork across all subjects. A big well done to everyone!
🧮 Maths Magic!
This week in Maths, we’ve been diving into column addition and subtraction—and what a brilliant job the children have done! We’ve also been learning how to estimate answers, which helps us check if our calculations make sense. The children have shown great resilience and are becoming confident mathematicians.
Next week, we’ll be rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000, and even counting backwards through zero to explore negative numbers—exciting stuff! We’ll also be working on our square number facts and focussing on the three times table. 🎶 Here's the song we use in class to help us learn it:

🎉 Congratulations to our Times Tables Rock Stars winners: Olive, Hollie and Archie! You rock!
✍️ English Adventures
In English, we’ve been learning how to punctuate conversations—specifically between Floella and her sister. The children remembered to use speech marks, commas, and to tell me who said what. We also explored using more powerful words than “said”—like exclaimed, whispered, and replied. Well done to our first red readers Eliza, Poppy, Reuben, Sebastian and Teddy. Fingers crossed we have more children getting a certificate next week.
Next week, we’ll be learning about prepositions of place and using them to write about the children’s journey across the sea to England, where they’ll be reunited with their parents. It’s going to be a moving and imaginative piece of writing.
In Science we finished off our work on Animals including humand with a bit of an experiment. I asked the question if you were taller or had longer legs would you be able to jump further. We all had a go at jumping and discused how to get an average jump distance and looked at our results. We came to the conclusion that it didn't really matte if you were taller it was about your muscle strength and practice.
📚 Don’t forget: Spelling test on Monday! Children will bring home their next group of spellings to practise.
🏺 History Highlights
Our journey through the Mayan civilisation continues! This week, we discovered that in 600 AD, the Maya had a thriving trade system along the seacoast. They traded cacao, cotton, corn, and even made salt by boiling brine. Next week, we’ll explore the importance of salt in Mayan culture—what it was used for and why it mattered so much.
🙏 RE Reflections
In RE, we’re thinking deeply about our big question:
“How can the Bible help a Christian with their way of life?”
We’re exploring the Bible as a guidebook, helping Christians understand how God wants them to live. We’re learning as Theologians, Sociologists and Philosophers—what a thoughtful bunch we are!
🧠 PSHE Power
We’re wrapping up our unit on hazards at home and how to stay safe. Next week, we begin our first Kiva session, part of our Anti-Bullying programme. We’ll be talking about where and who makes us feel safe. These sessions happen every half term and help us build a strong, supportive classroom community. Keeping children safe and happy is always our top priority.
🏏 PE Fun
We had a great session this Friday in our outside adventures. The children were partnered up and asked to give directions to their blindfolded friend to find the treasure and avoid the volcanoes. They were very good at communicating with each other. We’ll be enjoying our final cricket coaching session on Wednesday—thank you to our wonderful coaches! After that, PE kits will be sent home for a wash.
👉 Please label all items, and consider adding jogging pants, a warm top, and socks (especially for children who wear tights), as we’ll be heading outdoors if the weather allows.
