🌿 Oakmere Life – A Wonderful Start to KS2!
The children have made a fantastic start to life in Key Stage 2 here at Oakmere, and we couldn’t be prouder of how well they’re settling in and rising to the new expectations. Their enthusiasm, curiosity, and creativity have shone through in every lesson!
This morning, we had a truly magical time in art, working with natural materials to create beautiful and expressive pieces. The children explored plant-based inks, took nature prints, and even experimented with charcoal from the fireplace, just as people would have done in prehistoric times. It was a brilliant way to connect with history and nature while letting our creativity flow. Please have a look at the attached photographs.
📚 In English, we’ve been enjoying the powerful story Coming to England, which has sparked thoughtful discussions and inspired some excellent writing. We’ve revisited sentence structure and explored adverbial phrases, with many children confidently using fronted adverbials—very impressive work!
Our reading system went live on Monday, and it’s been heartwarming to see how many children have already been reading at home. Thank you for your support! 📖 A new spelling list will be sent out on Monday, and we’ll be testing the children on the words we’ve been practicing.
➕ In maths, we’ve been working on adding and subtracting 1, 10, and 100 from three-digit numbers, using our understanding of place value to guide us. The children are also making great progress with their times tables, and thanks to our lovely new iPads, they’ve been able to use Times Table Rock Stars (TTRS) every day in school. Please continue to encourage practice at home—it really makes a difference!
🎉 Special congratulations to Hollie and Oscar for completing their doubles book at home—what a fantastic achievement!
🔬 In science, we’ve been learning about nutrition and exploring food chains. A highlight this week was our game of “Guess the Animal by Its Teeth,” which led to lots of laughter and some very clever observations. The children are beginning to understand how carnivores and herbivores have different types of teeth and how everything in nature is interconnected.
✝️ In RE, we’ve been learning that the Bible was originally written in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, and exploring it both as theologians and historians. The children are developing a deeper understanding of its origins and significance.
🎨 In art, we’re continuing to explore how people have used the world around them to create for thousands of years—some artworks date back 64,000 years! The children are learning to make a variety of marks with charcoal, including thick and thin lines, smudging, and stippling.
🏏 In PE, we’re enjoying learning how to play cricket on Wednesdays, and on Fridays we’re making the most of the good weather with outdoor adventures.
📜 In history, we’re diving into the fascinating world of the Mayan civilization, discovering that their writing system included over 100 glyphs and signs. We’ve also learned that only four bark codices have survived to this day—a wonderful way to connect with ancient cultures.
🎟️ And finally, a big well done to Carson for winning our raffle ticket prize—keep up the great work!
Have a great weekend.
