Oakmere Blog – What’s Happening Next Week
What a lovely week we’ve had, even with the bitterly cold weather! The children have made us so proud with all the fantastic work they’ve completed in class. It’s been a great week at Oakmere! Today we had a very arty day between maths and PE where the children have been hard at work designing an enchanted winter scene for the annual Winsford Christmas CINE film.
We can't wait to see them in the window of the Crosshatch Gallery over the Christmas period. We'll let you know when the video is up and running.
English
Next week, we’ll be planning and starting our final piece of writing based on our book Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children will be writing a letter to Floella’s Grandma, sharing all the news from England.
We’ll explore letter formats and use all the skills we’ve practised this term—adverbs, prepositions, fronted adverbials, and noun phrases.
Well done to Poppy, Albie, Reuben, Eliza, and Bobby for earning their reading certificates!
Reminder: Please practise spellings at home—our test will be on Monday.
Maths
We’re continuing to work on multiplication and division, focusing on the 4× table. The children will tackle word problems and learn to identify the correct calculations. They’ll use skills such as multiplying by ten, spotting similar calculations, and applying known times tables.
In our Number Sense lesson, we’ll learn essential facts from the 5× table.
Well done to our TTRS stars! Please encourage your child to play regularly—it really helps with mastering those tricky tables.
Science
Our topic on rocks continues! Next week, we’ll explore fossils and how they form. We started our “fossil sandwich” experiment this week to show how pressure around a dead plant or animal (in our case, jellied snakes and strawberries!) creates fossils. The children were very disappointed I wouldn’t let them eat the sandwich!
Thank you to Reuben and Olivia for bringing in some beautiful rocks—we were impressed with your knowledge!
RE
We’ll be learning about Hindu gods and how they represent different aspects of one god, Brahman. The children will research these aspects and explore their symbolism. Last week, they were fascinated by the gods’ symbolism—I even had to brush up on my own knowledge! (I did disappoint them when I couldn’t explain why Lord Vishnu has a snake headdress!)
Geography
Our big question: Are all settlements the same? Next week, we’ll look at what makes an urban and suburban settlement. The children will study our local town and decide which category it fits into.
PSHE
We’ll focus on Keeping/Staying Healthy – Medicine Safety. The children will learn simple safety rules about medicine and understand who we can accept medicine from.
DT
It’s time to get creative! The children will design their Christmas cards. They’ll research which images the class prefers and why, then start designing their cards—including a moving part!
Music
We’re practising singing in a round and working hard on our Christmas song. It’s sounding great already! We won't say any more about it other than make sure that you are at our Carol Service on Wednesday 17th December in St. John's chirch at 1.30pm - you're in for a treat!
Well done to Oscar for being our raffle ticket winner, and huge congratulations to Olivia for doing so well in our Road Safety competition!
Thank you to everyone who has donated to our hamper—we still need a few more items, so any contributions would be greatly appreciated.
Have a wonderful weekend, and I’ll see you all on Monday!
