🌳 Oakmere Class Weekly Round-Up 🌳
Another busy, hard-working week in Oakmere Class — and what a fantastic week it’s been! It’s been so lovely to see the children rising to every challenge with enthusiasm and determination. We’re really proud of how much effort everyone is putting into their learning.
📚 English
We’ve continued our work on Coming to England by Floella Benjamin. The children have been using all their sentence-building skills to write some fantastic paragraphs about Floella’s early life in Trinidad. Next, we’ll be diving into the history of the Windrush — a really important part of British history.
✏️ Spellings for this week (test on the 6th!):
- care
- caring
- shake
- shaking
- stare
- staring
- move
- moving
Don’t forget to practise at home — little and often is the key! And remember to fill in those online reading diaries. Children who read at least four times last week will be getting a reward on Monday 🎉📖
➕➖ Maths
We’ve started our work on column addition and subtraction, learning how to carry the tens and hundreds. It’s tricky, but the children are doing brilliantly! We’re also still working on our 2x table — keep practising at home.
A huge congratulations to Kalvin, Thomas, and Carson for topping our Times Tables Rock Stars leaderboard this week! 🏆 The more you play, the more chances you have to win!
🥗 Science
Next week we will be learning about what makes a balanced meal. We wll explore the different food groups and what our bodies need to grow strong and healthy. The children will be thinking about good food choices and thinking carefully about what foods we should eat often — and which ones are best as occasional treats!
📖 RE
Next week we will be exploring different types of Bibles and how the text inside can change depending on the audience. The children will be reading the parable of The Unforgiving Servant and spotting similarities and differences in the versions. Hopefully the children will understand why different bibles are written in different ways.
🏺 History
In our Mayan topic, we continue to explore Mayan life and this upcoming week we will be learning about the gods the Mayan people believed in — many of whom had both good and bad sides. We’re focusing on the Rain God and exploring his role in Mayan life. The children will investigate the rituals and beliefs of this ancient civilisation.
🎨 Art
What a wonderfully messy lesson we had this week! The children pushed back the tables, got down on the floor, and experimented with charcoal. We explored all the different effects we could create — and even had a go at our own prehistoric cave paintings. Make sure to check out the photos!
Next week, we’ll be learning how to use charcoal to create contrast between light and dark — a technique called Chiaroscuro. We’ll also look at how different artists use light to create mood in their work.
