Oakmere Class Blog 27.2.26

Date: 27th Feb 2026 @ 3:58pm

What a lovely first week back we’ve had! The children have come straight back into the swing of things after the half‑term break, full of energy and enthusiasm. It certainly sounds like they all had wonderful holidays, with lots of exciting trips and adventures to share—our classroom has been buzzing with stories!

Maths Next Week

Next week in maths we will be beginning our topic on mass and weight. The children will be:

  • Reading grams (g) and kilograms (kg) on different scales
  • Comparing, adding and subtracting mass
  • Converting between grams and kilograms
  • Working out the difference between amounts on scales

We’ll also be moving on to the 8× table. The children will learn a brand‑new song, practise writing it out, and complete daily quizzes throughout March.

🎵 This month’s song: 8 Times Tables Song (cover of “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter)

A big well done to Poppy, Oliver and Reuben, our TTRS winners—no surprise they’re doing so brilliantly with all the extra practice at home!

English

In English, we will be finishing our class book and discussing the ending of the story, especially the moment when Spring finally arrives. The children will write a descriptive passage to match the picture from the final scene, including:

  • What they saw, heard, felt, and smelt
  • Conjunctions and adverbs for time
  • Correct verb endings, including was and did
  • Prepositions
  • Similes
  • Ending with a short piece of dialogue, applying the conventions we’ve practised

A huge well done to Daneel, Reuben, and Isabelle for earning their reading certificates—we are so proud!

Spellings

Great work to Kalvin, Carson, Charlie, Olivia, Poppy, Archie, Thomas, Sebastian, Oliver, Albie and Archie for scoring 8/8 on the spelling test this week!

🔤 This week’s spellings (test on 10th March)

  • subdivide
  • subdued
  • subheading
  • submarine
  • submerge
  • subscribe
  • subway
  • submit

World Book Day – Thursday

We’ll be celebrating World Book Day on Thursday with this year’s theme:

🌈 “Reading the Rainbow”
Children may come in colourful own‑clothes—either all one colour or a rainbow mix!

The day will be filled with themed activities, including a storytelling session.
Our Reading Champions are also hosting after‑school crafts and storytelling on 5th March, 3–4pm.
Please complete the form on School Spider if you wish to join.

Science

In Science, we are beginning our new topic: Forces and Magnets. We will start by exploring pushes and pulls, looking at how contact forces create movement. This will be a great opportunity for the children to observe the world around them and identify examples of:

  • Push forces
  • Pull forces
  • Movements that use both

History

In History, we will be learning about how immigrants brought animals and crops to Britain and how this influenced settlements. We will explore:

  • The beginning of agriculture
  • The domestication of useful animals
  • How this allowed Stone Age people to settle rather than live nomadically
  • Which of these animals are still part of our lives today

RE

Next week in RE, we begin learning about the Night of Power, an important Islamic festival that remembers the night Muslims believe the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad by the Angel Gabriel.

PSHE

This week we have been studying the British Value of the Rule of Law. The children created rules for our school and local community—some consequences they suggested were very strict, so we did have to remind them that we definitely do not have the death penalty in the UK!

Next week, the children will be presenting their rules and trying to persuade the class to vote for them.

PE

Our PE timetable has changed slightly:

  • Wednesday morning – Outdoor handball
  • Thursday afternoon – Team games and outdoor adventures

Please ensure children have suitable outdoor kit.

French & Computing

These lessons continue to be taught by Mrs Riley on Tuesday mornings.

Raffle Ticket Winner

A big congratulations to Maxwell, our raffle ticket winner this week! He has worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of him.  Maxwell brought in his swimming certificate to share with the class and got a huge round of applauds for doing so well.

Have a wonderful weekend!
