🌟 Friday Blog – Year 3 & 4 🌟
What a fantastic week we've had in Year 3 & 4! All the teachers who worked with the class this week were incredibly impressed with how hard everyone worked and how helpful and kind you all were. Well done, team – you should be very proud of yourselves! The children have all brought a slip home for their individual photographs-you should find them in your childs reading folder.
✏️ English
We finished writing our stories about Floella Benjamin’s early life in Trinidad. The children worked hard to edit their writing, checking for spelling mistakes and making sure their sentences made sense. We’ve also started exploring the arrival of the Windrush and its impact on British history. Floella’s dad was part of the Windrush generation, and next week we’ll be creating a character study of him, thinking about how he might have felt about the big changes ahead for his family.
📢 Reminder: Spelling test is on Monday – keep practising over the weekend!
➕ Maths
This week we continued working on column subtraction and addition, focusing on exchanging tens and hundreds. It’s a tricky skill, but the children are doing brilliantly learning how each hundred is worth ten tens, and each ten is worth ten ones. During our fluency sessions, we will be sharpening our knowledge of square facts. These are the numbers multiplied by themselves (e.g. 3 × 3 = 9). Can your child tell you their square facts up to 12 × 12? Why not challenge them at home or turn it into a quick-fire quiz at dinner? Now that the children have finished their 2x table they will be bringing home their booklets to practise at home.
🎉 Congratulations to Poppy, Thomas, and Kalvin – our Times Tables Rock Stars champions this week!
🔬 Science
We’ve started learning about what makes a balanced diet. The children will be designing their own healthy meals, thinking about carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. We’ll also be talking about their favourite foods and what nutrition those foods give our bodies.
⛪ RE
In RE, we will be comparing the parable of the Unforgiving Servant from two different Bibles. The children will discuss how the versions are different and who the intended audience might be. Great thinking and discussion from everyone!
🏺 History
We will be exploring how the Maya used dots, lines, and shells to represent numbers – including a symbol for zero, which they used long before Europeans did. The children are really enjoying our Mayan topic.
🎨 Art
This week we applied our shading skills to create contrast in our fruit still life drawings. The results were amazing – check out the photos of our artwork! Next week, we’ll be learning about Carolyn Sweeney, an artist who uses natural materials to paint the world around her.
🏏 PE
On Wednesday, we are lucky enough to have our cricket coaches come in to work with the children and on Friday we’ll be heading outside for some adventurous activities – weather permitting! If it’s too wet, we’ll still have fun with indoor adventures.
Have a lovely weekend everyone – rest well, keep practising your spellings and times tables, and we’ll see you bright and early on Monday! 😊
