🌳 Oakmere Class Update – Looking Ahead to Next Week 🌳
Mrs Kelly
We’ve had a really good week in Oakmere, with lots of hard work, focus and enthusiasm from the children – well done everyone! I’m really proud of how much effort the class has been putting into their learning.
Here’s a little look at what we’ll be getting up to next week…
✍️ English
In English, we are moving on to writing a letter to Tom’s dad. The children will be retelling the part of the story where Tom and the Winter’s Child explore the snowy wilderness.
We’ll be thinking carefully about how to include:
- adverbs
- expanded noun phrases
- adjectives
- prepositions
The children will start by creating a plan and then spend the rest of the week writing their letter and editing it to make it the best it can be.
📚 Spelling Reminder:
Please don’t forget to keep practising spellings at home – the children will be tested on 3rd February.
This week’s spellings are:
react, reappear, rebuild, reconsider, refill, refresh, regroup, replay
✨ Well done to those who did so well in their spelling test this week:
Kalvin, Sebastian, Poppy, Reuben, Oliver and Charlie – fantastic effort!
🌈 Rainbow Reading Certificates:
Well done to Sebastian, Eliza and Teddy for achieving their rainbow reading certificates – keep up the great reading!
➗ Maths
In maths, we are learning how to measure perimeter and area of regular shapes. The children will be counting squares to work out the area and applying what they know in different ways.
We will also continue working on the seven times table. The children have made such a confident start and have been great at spotting links with other times tables they already know.
🎵 Here is the song we are using to help us learn:
Seven Times Table Song (cover of Levitating by Dua Lipa)
🏆 Well done to Poppy and Archie for winning on TTRS – great work!
🕌 RE
We are starting a new RE topic on Islam, exploring the question:
What do Muslims believe happened on ‘The Night of Power’ and how do they worship?
In the first week, we will be learning about the life of Muhammad (pbuh) and how this led up to the Night of Power.
🔦 Science
Because the weather wasn’t kind to us this week, we postponed our outdoor shadow work. Instead, we learned about UV light and how it can be harmful if not treated with care.
Next week, we’ll be investigating how shadows are formed when light is blocked by an opaque object. The children will explore how:
- the position of the light source
- the object’s material (transparent, translucent, opaque)
affect the shape and size of shadows. We’ll be using torches, filters and lots of experimenting!
🗿 History
In History, we’ll be working towards answering the question:
How did Britain change after the last Ice Age?
We’ll be learning about the Palaeolithic period (Old Stone Age) and how the retreat of glaciers and a warmer climate created a better environment for early humans to thrive.
💬 PSHE
Our PSHE focus will be on stealing. The children will discuss:
- the impact stealing can have on others
- what actions they can take if they see someone stealing
⚽ PE
In PE, the class will continue working on football skills with me. This week’s focus will be moving with the ball and shooting at goal.
On Friday, the children will be developing their netball skills with the sports coach.
🎨 Art
In Art, we’ll be exploring mono printing to add depth and texture to our collage work. This will help the children understand how layers can be used effectively in art.
🎟️ Well done to Eliza, who has had a fabulous week and was our raffle ticket winner!
I’m really looking forward to sharing all of the children’s lovely work at the pupil consultation meetings next week.
Have a great weekend, and we’ll see you all on Monday!
