Year 3 & 4 – End of Week Blog
What a lovely week we’ve had! The sunshine has certainly lifted everyone’s spirits, and the children have enjoyed time both inside and outside the classroom as we move into spring.
World Book Day – A Wonderful Thursday!
Thursday was an absolute highlight. The children looked fantastic in their World Book Day outfits. We spent the day exploring The Proudest Blue by Ibtihaj Muhammad, an Olympic medalist and social justice activist. As the first Muslim American woman to compete in the Olympics while wearing a hijab, she has inspired many people around the world, and her story opened up some brilliant discussions in class.
The children wrote thoughtful and heartfelt poems about what they are proud of, and their “rainbow pride poems” are truly beautiful to read. Please take a look at the photographs we’ve included—they are wonderful!
Maths
Next week we will be moving from mass and weight to litres and millilitres. The children will be:
- converting between units
- reading a variety of scales
- comparing amounts
- adding and subtracting different measures
We will also begin working on the 8× table. throughout March, the class will:
- listen to an 8× table song
- practise writing the table
- complete daily quizzes to build confidence
A big well done to our TTRS winners: Poppy, Oscar and Sebastian! Your hard work is really paying off.
English
Now that we have finished our class text, we will begin planning our final write. We’ll be exploring:
- what makes a fable
- key features of the genre
- the moral or message behind the story
The children will collect ideas and consider all the elements needed for their own fables. They will be putting into practice everything we’ve learned this term, including speech, similes, adverbs and prepositions.
Spellings
This week’s spelling check will take place on 10th March.
The words are:
subdivide
subdued
subheading
submarine
submerge
subscribe
subway
submit
Science
We are introducing our brand‑new topic: Forces and Magnets. We’ll begin by exploring push and pull forces and how contact force creates movement. This is a brilliant opportunity for the children to observe how things move in the world around them.
A great challenge for home discussions:
Can you think of a movement that uses both push and pull?
History
In History, we continue our Golden Thread: salt.
Next week, the children will look at evidence showing how Stone Age people processed salt and used it for preserving food—a fascinating insight into early human innovation.
RE
We will be learning about the Night of Power, an important event for Muslims. This Islamic festival marks the night Muslims believe the Qur’an was first sent down from heaven to the Prophet Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. It’s a special opportunity to explore belief, tradition, and respect for different religions.
PSHE
Our Anti‑Bullying focus continues as we learn about how to help in difficult situations.
Children will explore:
- what they can do if they feel bullied
- how to support others
- where to go for help
These lessons help build empathy, courage, and confidence.
French and Computing
These subjects continue to be taught by Mrs Riley on Tuesday mornings.
