Oakmere's Super Scientists

Date: 28th Sep 2020 @ 7:07pm

Oakmere are learning all about plants at the moment and we have not one but two investigations underway! Firstly, we wanted to know what plants need in order to grow and to thrive. So we have set up a comparative test in which we have given 3 plants different things. One has been deprived of water, one has had no light and the final hasn't been given any warmth (it's in the fridge!). We have been making observations for the past 2 weeks and will do the final observation on Wednesday this week. As you can see from the photos below, the children have had a lot to comment on and I have been so impressed by what they have noticed. I wonder if you can guess which thing each of our plants has been deprived of?

Our second investigation has been looking at how water is transported around a plant. To do this, we set up 2 glasses of water with blue food colouring in them. One had warm water and the other had cold water. Then we trimmed the bottom off two white chrysanthemums and popped them in the blue water. We then left the flowers for a few days and on the fifth day we noticed something amazing happening... See if you can spot what we found by looking very closely at the photos below!
