Sandymere Remembers
Date: 14th Nov 2021 @ 3:34pm
We spent this week thinking about Remembrance Day and we linked this with our class Christian value, thankfulness. We looked at why poppies are used for Remembrance Day and spent time creating our own poppies using a range of different art techniques, including drawing on a computer.
One of our COOL time challenges was to design and build a cenotaph. Our ‘what is in the box’ this week allowed us to explore paper poppies and photographs linked to Remembrance Day.
In our geography work, we looked at how we remember in the local area. We used Google Maps to find memorials in Winsford and then used geographical vocabulary to describe where they are.
We were amazed to find out that a very brave soldier, from Word War 1, used to go to our school. His name is James Clarke and he was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery. He has a road named after him as a way of remembering him in the local area.
I will leave you with the prayer from our Class Collective Worship this week.
Dear God,
We want to say thank you for all those who have fought and died for the freedom we enjoy today.
We remember past conflicts, but we also remember all those who are fighting and dying in current wars.
We remember too their families and friends and ask that you will give comfort to them.
Teach us to be compassionate, thankful and caring people,
ever mindful of the needs of others.
We will remember.
Amen.
