Blakemere's Weekly Blog - 08.05.2026

Date: 10th May 2026 @ 1:29pm

As we come to the end of another busy and rewarding week, it has been wonderful to see so many moments where the children have shown perseverance, teamwork and pride in their learning—truly letting their light shine through all that they do.

In English, we have been planning and beginning to write our final piece inspired by the ending of King Kong. The focus has been on carefully describing settings, characters and atmosphere, using ambitious and purposeful word choices. The children have been working hard to include the mastery skills we have built throughout the unit, such as using speech to move the action forward and reveal character, expanded noun phrases, passive voice, adverbials and cohesion. It has been fantastic to see their confidence growing as they draw together all of these elements to create powerful and engaging writing.

In Maths, we explored the concept of ratio. At first, this was quite tricky, but the children have shown determination and resilience in developing their understanding. We are beginning to recognise that when we see “for every…”, it is often referring to ratio, and this is helping to build confidence. Alongside this, we have spent time revising key concepts in preparation for SATs, with the children producing thoughtful revision posters to support their learning.

Our PSHCE learning saw us complete our unit on first aid. The children brought together everything they have learned, exploring different equipment and discussing which situations each item might be used in. It has been encouraging to see them think carefully about how to help others in practical and responsible ways.

On Friday, we enjoyed a fantastic game of rounders out on the field during PE. There was some excellent batting and fielding on display, and it was lovely to see such strong teamwork and encouragement between the children. We then took part in a live-stream assembly celebrating the life and work of Sir David Attenborough. Through videos and discussion, we reflected on his dedication to protecting the natural world. This inspired us all to think about the small ways we can make a difference and care for our planet.

A special message to our Year 6 children—I am incredibly proud of you as you approach SATs week. You have worked so hard and shown such maturity and determination. Keep believing in yourselves—you’ve got this! We look forward to seeing you bright and early for breakfast at 8 o’clock.

To our Year 5 children, thank you for your support and encouragement this week while Year 6 have been preparing. Your kindness and understanding has not gone unnoticed.
