🌟 Blakemere Class Weekly Blog 🌟

Another great week has flown by in Blakemere Class!  Throughout the week, we have been reflecting on our vision of "Let Your Light Shine Before Others" and thinking about how we can use our unique gifts and talents to help ourselves and others flourish. It has been lovely to see so many children letting their lights shine through perseverance, creativity and thoughtful contributions in lessons as well as kindness and compassion.

📝 English

This week, we continued to develop our writing skills through a range of  activities. We began by creating a speech sandwich, focusing on the dialogue between two characters and ensuring our speech punctuation was accurate.

We then explored the use of passive voice and applied this to our own writing by creating a third-person recount using passive sentences. Towards the end of the week, we focused on one of the most important parts of the writing process: editing. We explored different strategies for improving cohesion and then applied these to a piece of writing that needed refining.

The children approached this challenge brilliantly. Using our mirrors, we reflected on how writing can always be improved and that mistakes help us grow as learners. I was incredibly impressed with the thoughtful improvements the children made and their willingness to persevere until their work was the very best it could be.

🔢 Maths

In Maths, our focus has been on rounding numbers. We explored how to round different numbers to different place values and applied this learning to a variety of questions and challenges.

At the start of the week, some children found this concept tricky, but it was fantastic to see confidence growing day by day. The children demonstrated great resilience, supporting one another and refusing to give up when faced with challenges. They certainly let their lights shine through their determination and positive attitudes towards learning.

🧬 Science

In Science, we explored the life and work of Charles Darwin and learned about his significance in developing ideas about evolution.

This learning provided a window into the work of one of history's most influential scientists. The children then used their knowledge to create fact files about Darwin, producing some wonderfully creative and informative work. It was lovely to see so many children taking pride in presenting their learning beautifully.

✝️ RE

In RE, we explored how Humanists believe the world began and compared these beliefs with Christian views about Creation.

This provided both a window into the beliefs of others and a mirror to reflect on our own ideas and opinions. I have been particularly impressed with the maturity, respect and thoughtfulness the children have shown when discussing different worldviews. They have listened carefully to each other's perspectives and demonstrated how we can let our lights shine through kindness and respect.

🚢 History

In History, we examined a range of sources linked to the Titanic and considered what they could tell us about what happened during the ship's ill-fated voyage.

The children particularly enjoyed studying photographs and other historical sources. These sources acted as windows into the past, helping us learn more about the people, events and experiences connected to the Titanic. The children asked thoughtful questions and showed lots of curiosity about the topic.

🎨 Art

In Art, we focused on the grid method and practised scaling up a drawing of a dog in preparation for our final piece.

I was delighted by the positive attitude the children showed towards this activity. Many remembered finding similar tasks challenging previously, but this time they approached the work with confidence and perseverance. It was wonderful to see them stepping through a door into new possibilities and recognising how much their skills have developed. The final drawings were fantastic and showed great attention to detail.

As always, it has been a pleasure to see the children growing in confidence and embracing new challenges. Through their hard work, perseverance and kindness towards one another, they have continued to demonstrate what it means to let their light shine before others.
