🌟 Blakemere Class Weekly Blog 🌟
What another great week of learning we have had in Blakemere Class! I continue to be proud of the children's enthusiasm and effort. Throughout the week, we have seen so many opportunities for the children to live out our vision of "Let Your Light Shine Before Others" by sharing their ideas, persevering when learning becomes challenging and encouraging those around them. Through our Windows, Mirrors and Doors approach to spirituality, we have continued to learn about the world around us, reflect on our own thoughts and beliefs, and consider how our learning can influence our actions.
📝 English
This week, we completed our final piece of writing based on our class text, The Water Tower. The children planned and wrote what we called the "missing pages" of the story. As something mysterious happens to Bubba, the main character, but the reader never discovers exactly what, the children had the exciting task of imagining and writing this part of the story themselves.
They worked hard to include the mastery keys we have developed throughout the unit and produced some incredibly creative and imaginative pieces of writing. The story acted as a window into a mysterious world, whilst our writing encouraged us to look into our mirrors and draw upon our own ideas and creativity. It was wonderful to see every child letting their unique light shine through their writing.
🔢 Maths
In Maths, we began our new unit on the four operations. We started by revisiting addition and subtraction with both whole numbers and decimals before exploring how to solve calculations involving missing numbers.
The children demonstrated resilience when tackling challenging problems. It was fantastic to see confidence growing throughout the week as children shared strategies and supported one another. Their perseverance reminded us that sometimes our brightest light shines when we keep going, even when learning feels difficult.
🎨 Art
In Art, we explored a range of mark-making techniques that we may incorporate into our final sculpture pieces. The children experimented with different approaches and considered how various marks can create texture, detail and meaning within artwork.
🚢 History
Our Titanic learning continued this week as the children answered a range of questions using different historical sources and resources. They showed great curiosity and enthusiasm for the topic, carefully selecting evidence to support their answers.
These sources acted as windows into the past, helping us build a clearer understanding of one of history's most significant events. The children continue to ask thoughtful questions and are eager to find out more.
✝️ RE
In RE, we continued exploring our enquiry question:
"Can Science disprove Genesis?"
This week, we learned about the differing viewpoints of Creationists, Theists and Atheists. The children then reflected on which viewpoint most closely matched their own current thinking and explained their reasons.
I was truly blown away by the maturity, thoughtfulness and respect shown during these discussions. The children articulated their ideas with confidence and sensitivity. This learning provided both a window into different worldviews and a mirror through which the children could reflect upon their own beliefs and opinions.
🧬 Science
In Science, we continued exploring the work of Charles Darwin and his observations of finches on the Galápagos Islands. We carried out an investigation to determine which birds were best suited to different islands based on their characteristics and adaptations.
This learning gave us a fascinating window into how scientists gather evidence and develop ideas. The children enjoyed working scientifically and exploring how adaptations can help species survive in different environments.
As always, I have been impressed by the children's attitudes, thoughtful contributions and determination to succeed. Whether through creative writing, mathematical problem solving, scientific investigations or respectful discussions, they have continued to let their lights shine brightly throughout the week.
