🌟 Blakemere Class Weekly Blog 🌟

Another fantastic week in Blakemere Class! It has been wonderful to see the children continuing to grow in confidence and independence. Throughout our learning this week, we have reflected on our school vision of "Let Your Light Shine Before Others" (Matthew 5:16). We have been thinking about how each of us has a unique light within us, with different talents, gifts and ideas, and how we can use these to help, encourage and inspire others.

📝 English

This week, we continued exploring our class text, The Water Tower by Gary Crew. Using the expanded noun phrases we created last week, we wrote detailed setting descriptions. We then explored how to create complex sentences using subordinate conjunctions and practised writing our own based on intriguing images.

Towards the end of the week, we became rumour writers, creating rumours about what might happen at the Water Tower. The mystery of the text provided a window into an unfamiliar world, whilst our writing allowed us to use our own unique creativity and imagination to let our lights shine.

🔢 Maths

In Maths, we continued our work on 6 and 7-digit numbers, ordering and comparing them and solving a variety of reasoning and problem-solving questions. The children showed excellent perseverance and mathematical thinking, particularly when explaining how they knew one number was greater or smaller than another.

Today, we moved on to exploring Roman numerals, and the children were fascinated by this new way of representing numbers. It was lovely to see them supporting one another and confidently sharing their ideas, helping everyone's light to shine a little brighter.

🚢 History

In History, we began exploring what life would have been like aboard the Titanic and some of the key events surrounding its maiden voyage. This gave us a window into the lives of people from the past and encouraged us to consider how different their experiences were from our own.

We then created our own timelines using dates and times to sequence key events from the voyage. The children enjoyed stepping back in time and developing their understanding of this significant historical event.

🧬 Science

In Science, we explored how characteristics can be inherited from our parents. Using the Mr Men and Little Miss characters, we investigated how certain traits can be passed down through generations.

This learning encouraged us to use our mirrors to reflect on what makes us who we are. We discussed how, while we may inherit characteristics from our families, each of us is wonderfully unique and has our own special light to share with the world.

🎨 Art

This week in Art, we explored the technique of positive and negative space. The children worked incredibly hard to create their designs, using some very careful and intricate cutting techniques.

Although the task was challenging, the children approached it with determination and patience. It was wonderful to see them stepping through a door into new artistic experiences and developing new skills with confidence.

✝️ RE

Our new RE unit will focus on the question:

"Can Science disprove what the Bible says about Creation?"

To begin our learning journey, we spent time revisiting the Creation story and discussing its meaning for Christians. This learning gave us a window into Christian beliefs and encouraged us to use our mirrors to reflect on our own thoughts and questions. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to explore this fascinating topic with curiosity and respect.

💻 Internet Safety

This week, we also welcomed PCSO Jorge, who spoke to all of Key Stage 2 about internet safety. The children listened carefully and engaged thoughtfully with important discussions about staying safe online. This opened a door to considering how our choices online can affect both ourselves and others and how we can let our lights shine through positive and responsible behaviour.

As always, I have been incredibly proud of the enthusiasm and effort shown by the children this week. Whether through sharing ideas, persevering with challenges, supporting friends or showing curiosity in their learning, they have continued to demonstrate that each of us has a unique light within us that can make a positive difference to those around us.
