๐ŸŒŸ Blakemere Weekly Blog – A Wonderful First Week Back!

Apologies that this update is arriving a little later than usual!

We’ve had a fantastic first week back after the halfโ€‘term break, and the children settled brilliantly into their learning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to:

โœ๏ธ English – Blitz Poetry

In English, we planned and wrote our final poems about the Blitz, inspired by the model poem I Heard the Night Shake. The children explored what life may have felt like before, during, and after an air raid, using personification and powerful, atmospheric vocabulary.

The results were stunning—every poem showcased imagination, emotion, and thoughtful language choices. I am incredibly proud of what each child achieved.

โž— Maths – Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

We continued investigating the relationships between fractions and decimals and have now added percentages into the mix. Over the next week, we’ll be learning how to find percentages of different amounts and strengthening our understanding of how all three representations connect.

The children are tackling this with great enthusiasm!

๐Ÿ›๏ธ History – Local History: The Salt Industry

We kicked off our new history topic focusing on how the salt industry has changed over time in Winsford and Nantwich.

To begin, the children examined four historical images. They worked brilliantly to discuss, make connections, and identify links between them. The level of conversation was impressive—lots of thoughtful ideas and curiosity on display!

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ DT – Fairground Rides

A very exciting moment… our fairground kits finally arrived! These relate to our pulley mechanisms unit from before Christmas, so we spent two whole days constructing working fairground rides.

The children:

  • built complete electrical circuits to power their ride,
  • accurately measured and sawed wood to construct the frame,
  • designed and attached a roof,

…all with fantastic teamwork and perseverance.

By Friday afternoon, we had 26 fully working chairโ€‘oโ€‘planes! I was blown away by the children’s practical skills and determination. Amazing work, Blakemere!

๐Ÿ”ก Spelling – The ‘ie’ Grapheme (‘ee’ Sound)

This week we are focusing on the ie grapheme making an “ee” sound, as in siege and achieve.
The spelling list is attached to the blog, and our next spelling check will be Monday 16th March.
