Hatchmere's Class Blog 2.10.26

Date: 1st Oct 2026 @ 5:12pm

Hatchmere thoroughly enjoyed spotting signs of Autumn within the school grounds. We discovered sunflower heads, pumpkins, seed heads, leaves on the floor, changing leaf colours and berries. We've popped lots of new treasures in our Autumn tray and will begin exploring them in detail next week.

Our Mathematicians are continuing to develop their subitising skills and growing more confident in explaining their knowledge of number. For instance: one and another one and another one makes three. They are beginning to realise that numbers have other numbers hidden inside them. We have become number and shape detectives in our Outside classroom. I keep trying to ask really tricky questions during our numicon numberline quizzes, but the children are just too smart for me! I will try again next week!

As our phonics programme continues to progress the children have now begun to word build. They have been using the sounds that they know to create CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words: sat, mat, sag, tin, pit etc. This is a tricky task at first, however, in Hatchmere we always say the same thing – ‘It’s ok to find things tricky, what is important is that we try’. Lots of support and praise is always given to the children at this early stage.

Our Literacy focus this week was identifying items in a familiar picture using the sounds that we know. As you can see from the pictures below Hatchmere were just amazing at spotting the nuts, squirrel, sun, trees, insect, nest, mouse etc. They all received raffle tickets and lots of praise for their first proper writing task! Woohoo!

We had a very windy day this week and in true Hatchmere style, we downed tools and took full advantage. We used the windsocks, ribbons and flew our kite! The children were full of excitement watching the kite fly and swoop down close, it was fabulous to see.

By exploring God’s creation and noticing the signs of Autumn, showing perseverance when learning new phonics and word-building skills, and celebrating each other’s successes with kindness and encouragement, the children in Hatchmere have truly let their light shine before others this week.
