This week, we have continued to think about how we can let our light shine through our learning, perseverance and teamwork.
In Maths, we have moved on to addition, exploring both mental and written methods. The children have been developing their confidence in deciding which strategy is most efficient for different calculations. They have also applied these skills to a range of reasoning activities, including problem-solving and word problems, showing resilience and determination when tackling challenges.
In English, we have focused on developing our editing skills, carefully reviewing and improving our writing to make it even better. The children have shown great attention to detail as they have reflected on their work and thought about how to strengthen vocabulary, punctuation and sentence structure. We then looked at a modelled diary entry and the different features we could use in our own diary writing about events in Matthew Henson's life. We are looking forward to completing our Big Write very soon and seeing all of their hard work come together.
Our Science lessons have explored how condensation occurs. We have investigated everyday examples of this process and discussed where we might see it in real life. This understanding is preparing us well for learning about the water cycle next week, where we will link together all the processes we have studied.
In PE, we have continued to have lots of fun developing our cricket and tag rugby skills. The children have demonstrated excellent teamwork, encouragement and sportsmanship as they have supported one another and let their light shine both on and off the field.
Our music lessons have been full of enthusiasm this week. Year 4 are thoroughly enjoying their Beatbox unit, creating some amazing sounds with their voices and working brilliantly together. Meanwhile, Year 5 continue to make good progress with their violin lessons, showing increasing confidence and skill with their instruments.
In RE, we explored messages from a Gospel and created our own images to represent them. The children produced some thoughtful and creative interpretations, reflecting carefully on how these teachings can inspire us to let our light shine in our daily lives through kindness, compassion and service to others.
In History, we have been learning about the legacy the Romans left behind in Britain. We explored how Roman roads helped people travel, trade and connect different parts of the country. We also discovered that some place names today have Roman roots, helping us understand how the Romans influenced the areas where we live. In addition, we investigated famous Roman sites, such as baths and discussed what these buildings tell us about life in Roman Britain.
In Art, we have been developing our printing skills through styrofoam printing. We gathered ideas from nature and used leaves, flowers and natural shapes to inspire our designs. Next, we carefully pressed repeated patterns into styrofoam sheets before applying paint. Finally, we printed our designs and evaluated how repetition, texture and pattern helped us create effective pieces of artwork.
Reminders
- PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure PE kits are in school.
- 📚 Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.
- ✏️ Spelling test will be on Thursday 22nd October. Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom.
Spelling words are: should've, could've, would've, must've, might've, mustn't, won't, mightn't, you're, shan't, it's.
- ✖️ Times Tables - Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.
This week, our excellent examples who have truly let their light shine through their positive attitude and hard work are Billie, Oscar and Sebastian.
We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm and positivity shown by all of the children this week. It has been wonderful to see so many examples of them living out our school vision and truly letting their light shine before others. ✨
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Skelley and Miss Reid.
