Linmere's Class Blog - 11.09.26

What a fantastic week we have had in Linmere! It has been wonderful to see all of the children letting their lights shine through their enthusiasm for learning, their contributions in class discussions and their determination to produce work of the highest standard. The children have worked incredibly hard to follow our PROUD policy, taking pride in the presentation and quality of their work. We have also been challenging ourselves to think more deeply about our learning by answering reflective and reasoning questions that encourage us to explain our thinking and make connections across subjects. 

In English, we have started exploring our exciting new book, Young, Gifted and Black. The children have particularly enjoyed learning about Jesse Owens and Bessie Coleman. They were amazed to discover that Bessie Coleman used to walk on the wings of aeroplanes while they were flying through the air! The stories of these inspirational individuals have sparked some thoughtful discussions and reminded us of the importance of perseverance and believing in ourselves. 

In Maths, we have been consolidating key skills before applying them to larger and more challenging numbers. The children have worked hard to tackle reasoning questions, explaining their methods and justifying their answers. It has been great to see their confidence grow as they apply their knowledge in increasingly complex ways. 

Our Science lessons have focused on the properties of solids, liquids and gases. We had great fun acting out how particles behave in each state of matter and worked collaboratively to solve some challenging reasoning tasks. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly our investigation using frozen balloons, water-filled balloons and balloons filled with gas. The children loved making observations and were able to identify the key properties of each state of matter. 

In RE, we explored how Jesus is portrayed in different pieces of artwork. The children carefully considered colour, positioning, atmosphere and other artistic choices to decide what message the artist wanted to communicate about Jesus. They demonstrated excellent thinking skills and shared thoughtful interpretations with their classmates. 

In History, we have been exploring chronology by creating and studying a timeline of the Roman Empire. We learned how historians place important events in order to understand what happened and when. The children enjoyed discovering how the Roman Empire changed and grew over time. 

In Art, we have been learning about the famous artist Henri Matisse and exploring some of his most well-known pieces of artwork. We took a closer look at The Sheaf and discussed Matisse's use of bold colours and simple shapes. The children then completed a ‘meet the artist’ page, explaining different skills and techniques Matisse used in his artwork. 

We were also fortunate to have a cricket coach join us this half term to help develop our batting, bowling and fielding skills. The children showed great teamwork and determination throughout the session. 

Reading continues to be a real focus in class, and it has been lovely to see the children reading independently, during shared reading sessions and discussing books with enthusiasm. Reading books will begin coming home from Monday 14th September, and we will also start recording our reading again on the online system. 

Reminders 

• PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure PE kits are in school. 

• Year 5 violin lessons begin next week. 

• 📚 Reading books will come home from Monday 14th September. Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.     

• ✏️ Spelling test will be on Thursday 24th September. Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom. 

• ✖️ Times Tables - Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well. 

This week, our excellent examples who have truly let their light shine through their positive attitude and hard work are Isabelle, Matilda and Tyler.

Thank you for your continued support. It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence and sharing their ideas so thoughtfully. We look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead as we continue to let our light shine through our curiosity, resilience and kindness towards others.
