Linmere's Class Blog - 16.10.26

Date: 16th Oct 2026 @ 3:15pm

It has been another busy week in Year 4 and 5, with the children working hard across the curriculum and having a very special visit too!

In English, the children have begun their Big Write, giving them the opportunity to show off all the writing skills we have been developing. We have been really impressed with the care and determination they are putting into their writing and cannot wait to see their finished pieces.

In maths, we have moved on to written subtraction. The children have been developing their confidence with the formal written method before applying their skills to a range of reasoning and problem-solving questions. They have worked particularly hard when exchanges have been needed.

🚒 Fire Safety

We were very lucky to welcome the firefighters into school to talk to us about fire safety in the home. The children learnt about the importance of having a fire escape plan and knowing exactly what to do in an emergency.

Why not ask your child what a family fire plan should include? You could discuss:

  • the safest routes out of your home;
  • keeping exits and doorways clear;
  • where everyone should meet once safely outside;
  • the importance of getting out and staying out;
  • making sure everyone knows how to call 999 in an emergency.

The firefighters also reminded us about the importance of having working smoke alarms. If you do not have smoke detectors at home, please contact your local fire service for advice rather than calling 999, which should only be used for emergencies.

In RE, we explored the idea that one person can have different roles and relationships with different people. We used this idea to help us begin thinking about the Christian belief of the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The children discussed how Christians understand these as three different persons of one God.

In History, we have been learning about why salt was so important to the Romans. We discovered that salt was used to preserve food and was such a valuable resource that it was sometimes linked to payment for Roman soldiers. We learned that the word salary comes from the Latin word salarium, which is connected to salt. We also explored the Roman salt-making sites in Cheshire and investigated why our local area was important to Roman trade and industry.

In Art, we have begun planning and designing our own 3D sculptures. We are creating potted plants using a range of materials, including collage, cardboard and metal. We carefully sketched our ideas and considered how different materials can create texture, shape and detail. We are looking forward to turning our designs into finished sculptures and seeing our creative ideas come to life.

Finally, in science, the children have put their learning about states of matter into action by exploring the water cycle. They used their understanding of evaporation and condensation to explain how water continually moves through the environment, making excellent links with our previous learning.

Reminders

  • PE days are Wednesday and Thursday. Please ensure PE kits are in school.
  • 📚 Please aim for four reading sessions each week. Short, relaxed reads are perfect.
  • ✏️ Spelling test will be on Thursday 22nd October. Practicing the spellings and meanings at home really supports them in the classroom.

Spelling words are: should've, could've, would've, must've, might've, mustn't, won't, mightn't, you're, shan't, it's.

  • ✖️ Times Tables - Regular times‑table practice helps build confidence. A few minutes each day works well.

This week, our excellent examples who have truly let their light shine through their positive attitude and hard work are Tyler, Hollie & Beatrice.

Another fantastic week of learning in Year 4 and 5. Well done, everyone! 🌟

Have a lovely weekend,

Mrs Skelley and Miss Reid.
