Oakmere Class Blog 11.10.26

Date: 11th Oct 2026 @ 7:17pm

It has been another wonderful week in Oakmere Class, full of learning, perseverance and opportunities for everyone to let their light shine. Mrs McPartland taught the class at the beginning of the week and was delighted with the children's respectful attitudes, excellent manners and consideration for others. We are incredibly proud of how positively they represent both our class and our school community.

English

This week, we began writing diary entries based on our class text. The children carefully planned their writing and explored the emotions experienced by both the family and the father as events unfolded throughout the story. It has been lovely to see the children thinking deeply, showing empathy and considering events from different perspectives.

Next week, the children will be using their knowledge of conjunctions, noun phrases and adverbs to make their writing even more detailed, engaging and effective. We are looking forward to seeing their ideas and creativity shine through in their final pieces.

Spelling

The children brought home a new spelling list this week. We are focusing on the suffixes -ment and -ness.

Remember: When a suffix begins with a consonant, it is usually added straight onto the root word without changing the spelling.

This Week's Spellings

  • amazement
  • enjoyment
  • merriment
  • punishment
  • darkness
  • sadness
  • silliness
  • happiness

Please continue to practise these spellings regularly at home.

📚 Reading Reminder

Thank you for your continued support with reading at home. It is always wonderful to see the photographs and hear the recordings shared on our learning portal. Regular reading helps children grow in confidence and allows their learning to shine across all areas of the curriculum.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have started learning about column addition and subtraction. The children have been partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones to help them calculate accurately and develop a deeper understanding of place value.

Next week, we will begin learning how to exchange when a calculation cannot be completed using the existing digits. The children have approached this new learning with determination and resilience.

Science

Our Science learning has focused on the different types of skeletons found in animals.

Three Types of Skeletons

ðŸĶī Endoskeleton (inside the body)

  • Humans
  • Dogs
  • Birds

🐚 Exoskeleton (outside the body)

  • Crabs
  • Beetles
  • Spiders

🌊 Hydrostatic Skeleton (supported by fluid within the body)

  • Earthworms
  • Jellyfish
  • Sea anemones

Over the coming weeks, the children will investigate the advantages and disadvantages of each type of skeleton and discover how these adaptations help animals survive in different environments.

History

In History, we are continuing our fascinating journey into Ancient Egypt.

This week, we explored how trade helped Ancient Egypt become wealthy and connected to other civilisations. The children learned that Egyptians traded goods such as grain, papyrus, linen cloth and gold for valuable resources including wood, precious stones, ivory, spices and perfumes.

It has been wonderful to see the curiosity and thoughtful questions the children have brought to our discussions.

RE

In RE, we will be exploring the Christian belief of the Holy Trinity.

Christians believe in one God who exists as three Persons:

  • God the Father
  • God the Son (Jesus)
  • God the Holy Spirit

The children will be investigating symbols used to represent the Trinity and examining where they can be found in churches and Christian artwork.

Symbols of the Trinity

☘ïļ The Shamrock

Saint Patrick famously used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Just as one shamrock has three parts yet remains one leaf, Christians believe God is three Persons but one God.

We will also explore the Triquetra, a symbol made of three interlocking loops that is often used to represent the Trinity.

PE

The children will continue developing their invasion game skills with the sports coach and, weather permitting, will also be working on their core fitness.

PE kits were sent home on Friday after our particularly soggy lessons this week to avoid them becoming damp and mouldy. Please ensure kits are returned by Tuesday.

Art

In Art, we have been building on our drawing skills by learning how artists create a sense of movement in their work. The children studied some of the earliest surviving artworks created by humans and discussed the reasons people may have created them.

We explored the famous Lascaux Cave Paintings in France and considered what these ancient drawings can tell us about life thousands of years ago. The children shared thoughtful ideas and demonstrated excellent observational skills. The children had a lovely afternoon drawing outside in the style of prehistoric artists.

💉 Flu Vaccinations

The children received their flu vaccinations on Friday and were an absolute credit to the school. The nurses commented on their excellent behaviour, politeness and positive attitudes throughout the morning.

As we continue through the term, it has been a pleasure to see the children working hard, supporting one another and using their unique gifts and talents each day. Whether through learning, kindness, creativity or perseverance, there have been many moments where their light has shone brightly this week.

Have a great week.
