_{What a fantastic first full week back!}

_{It has been lovely to see the children settling back into school routines so quickly. The classroom has been buzzing with enthusiasm, positivity and lots of smiling faces. I have been incredibly impressed with how well everyone has approached their learning and the effort they have put into all of our activities.}

_English

_{We have started our new class book, Count on Katherine, which tells the inspirational story of Katherine Johnson and her important work during the Space Race. Next week, the children will begin researching the early stages of the Space Race between America and Russia. They will be gathering facts and ideas ready to write their own non-fiction paragraphs.}

_Spellings

_{Our first set of spellings was sent home on Tuesday. The children will be practising these during our morning activities in school, but extra practice at home really does make a difference.}

_{If the spelling list has gone astray, here are the words again:}

_Reading

_{The children have chosen their new reading books and these will come home on Monday. Please encourage your child to bring their reading book and reading folder into school every day as we try to read as often as possible.}

_{In Oakmere, children read at different rates and can change their books when they are ready. Before changing books, we encourage them to talk about what they have read and answer a few questions. Being able to discuss a text is such an important reading skill, so please spend a few moments chatting about the story when you hear them read at home.}

_{The class are very excited to begin their reading journey this year. Don't forget to log every read!}

_Maths

_{This week we have begun our Place Value unit. Place value is one of the most important foundations in maths and supports so much of the learning we will do throughout the year.}

_{The children have been:}

• _{Recognising the value of each digit in a three-digit number}
• _{Partitioning numbers using Base Ten equipment}
• _{Adding and subtracting tens and ones}

_{We have also started revisiting times tables knowledge, beginning with the 2 times table. Every maths lesson starts with a times table song and the children are already joining in enthusiastically!}

_{Next week we will be introducing hundreds alongside our tens and ones columns as we continue to build confidence with larger numbers.}

_{Times Table Rock Stars}

_{Your child's TTRS login can be found in their reading folder. The children have been accessing the programme independently in school and have done a fantastic job logging in and practising.}

_{Please encourage regular use at home, as it really helps to reinforce the skills we are learning in class.}

_Science

_{In Science, we have started our topic Animals Including Humans.}

_{This week we explored why nutrition is important and how different animals need different nutrients to stay healthy.}

_{Next week we will look at how humans and animals obtain nutrition from food. We will also begin investigating the digestive system and comparing the teeth of different animals to discover what they can tell us about an animal's diet.}

_RE

_{We have been tackling some big questions in RE:}

_{"What is my point of view about God and why do people have faith?"}

_{The children have been carefully considering their own thoughts and opinions and learning how to express them respectfully. As you can imagine, these are challenging ideas for anyone to put into words, let alone young children!}

_{During our class collective worship, we also introduced our Christian value for this term: Forgiveness. Together we discussed what forgiveness means and how it can be shown in everyday life.}

_PE

_{The children thoroughly enjoyed their invasion games lesson with Mr Burgess this week. I was incredibly impressed by their effort, teamwork and determination.}

_{A special congratulations goes to Archie, who was chosen as Mr Burgess' Sporting Superstar this week.}

_{During my PE lesson, we have been focusing on fitness and stamina. The children completed a circuit training session and really impressed me with their determination and fitness levels. We will repeat the same circuit at the end of the unit and hopefully everyone will notice how much their stamina has improved.}

_Art

_{This week we explored the work of artist Laura McKendry and began creating fact files about her life and artwork.}

_{Next week promises to be exciting as we get the charcoal out, move the tables back and experiment with creating different marks and effects on a larger scale. The children are very much looking forward to it!}

_{We have also been creating artwork linked to our Christian value of Forgiveness. We are hoping to finish our beautiful "Forgiving Hands" display next week and I will share photographs once it is complete.}

_History

_{Next week we begin our exciting new history topic with a treasure hunt inspired by Howard Carter.}

_{The children will explore the significance of Carter's discovery and learn about some of the remarkable treasures found inside the tomb of Egypt's famous boy king, Tutankhamun.}

_{School Council Elections}

_{This week we held our School Council elections.}

_{Children who wished to stand for election made a short speech explaining why they would make excellent representatives. Every child who put themselves forward showed tremendous courage and confidence and should be very proud of themselves.}

_{Congratulations to Bobby, Holly and Coby, who have been selected as our School Council representatives for the year ahead. We know they will do a fantastic job representing the views of our class.}

_{A special mention must also go to Teddy, who really let his light shine during this process. Teddy graciously stepped aside to allow his friend Bobby the opportunity to take part, showing great kindness and maturity. I was incredibly proud of him.}

_{Raffle Ticket Winner}

_{Our raffle ticket winner this week was Grace. She has had an excellent week. She has listened carefully, worked hard and shown a wonderfully positive attitude towards all of her learning. Her cheerful nature and determination have really paid off.}
