Year 3 & 4 End‑of‑Week Blog
What a busy and brilliant week we’ve had in Oakmere!
Maths
This week the children have been finishing our topic on capacity. They’ve been busy measuring amounts, reading scales, comparing capacities and converting between litres and millilitres. They will now be applying all this knowledge in a series of problem‑solving challenges—something they’re already showing great enthusiasm for!
We’ve also been impressed with how confidently the children are using their eight times table. Their recall is improving every day, and they’re already applying it in their calculations.
A big well done to Poppy and Izzy, our TTRS winners this week! All their hard work and practice at home is clearly paying off—fantastic effort girls!
English
In English, we’ve begun planning our final written piece linked to the beautiful story Winter’s Child. The children have created their own fantasy characters who will play a starring role in their stories.
We continue with our whole-school approach to writing:
- I model a section,
- the children plan and discuss their own ideas,
- we share suggestions as a class so we can magpie the best bits,
- and finally, the children write their own sentences.
As always, the children will be editing as they go—checking punctuation, spelling and ensuring their writing makes sense.
Well done to carson, Charlie, Kalvin, Eliza, Olive, reuben, Teddy, Archie, Albie, seb and Daneel for getting full marks this week on their spelling check..
This week’s spellings (test on 24th March):
- antibiotic
- antibody
- anticlockwise
- antiseptic
- antisocial
- autograph
- automatic
- autopilot
well done to Oliver, Eliza and Billie for getting their reading certificates.
Science
In Science, we’re beginning to explore how different surfaces affect friction. The children will discuss what makes a fair test, set their own rules, and then investigate how far marbles travel across different surfaces. Lots of great scientific thinking ahead!
PE
In PE, we are continuing to develop our handball skills with a focus next week on combining movement with throwing and catching. On Thursdays, the children are working with our sports coach on improving their hockey skills.
RE
Next week in RE we’ll be learning about The Night of Power and how modern Muslims celebrate this important event. The children will then make comparisons with their own experiences of special celebrations.
Geography
Our new topic will begin this week—Plastic and its impact on the world. This week we’re learning the difference between single‑use and reusable plastics and identifying different types of plastic found in the environment.
PSHE
We are finishing our unit on stealing, thinking about how it feels to have something taken from you and understanding the clear difference between borrowing and stealing. Some thoughtful conversations have been taking place in class.
Art
The children are putting the final touches to their Henri Matisse–inspired collage scenes, each one representing our classroom. We hope to have all pieces finished next week so we can display everyone’s wonderful effort.
French & Computing
These lessons continue on Tuesday mornings with Mrs Riley. The children are making great progress and enjoying the activities she plans.
Celebrations
A huge congratulations to Eliza, our raffle ticket winner this week! Well done for showing such great effort and attitude.
Have a lovely weekend,
Mrs Kelly 🌟
