Oakmere Class Blog – Weekly Update
It has been wonderful to welcome the children back and hear all about their holiday adventures. Thank you to the parents who sent in photographs for us to share in class. It’s hard to believe that we are now in our final term of Year 3!
Science
This week in Science, the children will be exploring the functions of the different parts of flowering plants. We will be learning to identify and describe the roots, stem/trunk, leaves and flowers.
As part of this learning, the children will be given plants to carefully ‘dissect’ so they can observe and label the different parts. They will discuss what is similar and what is different between plants and consider how trees are the same or different.
English
In English, we are continuing our work on Stone Age Boy. This week we will be focusing on the setting, writing sentences to describe the scene in detail. The children will be working on:
- Turning adjectives into comparatives (‑er) and superlatives (‑est)
- Using prepositions to express time, place and cause
- Writing expanded noun phrases
- Using progressive verb forms
Super spellers this week:
⭐ Oliver
⭐ Charlie
⭐ Sebastian
⭐ Kalvin
⭐ Izzy
⭐ Billie
⭐ Teddy
⭐ Archie
Thank you to all the children who continued reading over the holidays. A special well done to Poppy, Eliza, Hollie and Sebastian, who earned their reading certificates this week.
Maths
In maths, we have moved on to the 9 times table and have continued learning how to tell the time. The children are becoming more confident with clocks using Roman numerals and are practising both 12‑hour and 24‑hour time.
Next week we will be:
- Telling the time to the nearest minute
- Using vocabulary such as o’clock, a.m., p.m., morning, afternoon, noon and midnight
- Learning how many seconds are in a minute
- Revising how many days are in each month, including leap years
Times Tables Rock Stars winners:
⭐ Sebastian
⭐ Olivia
⭐ Izzy
Great work!
PE
Next week, the children will be taking part in athletics with the coach and outdoor games with me. Thank you to everyone who returned their child’s PE kit to school.
RE
In RE, the children will work with a partner to retell the story of the angel Jibril visiting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), which was introduced in the first session of this unit.
We will discuss:
- What we think angels might look like and what influences these ideas
- Why there are no images of angels in Islam, due to beliefs about idolatry
- How messages are sent today (internet, mobile phones, texts, letters, satellites, etc.)
Children will learn that in Islam, angels (Malaikah) are believed to have been created by Allah before humans and that their role is to act as messengers.
Collective Worship
During collective worship this week, we had five enthusiastic volunteers helping to retell a Bible story with Open the Book. Well done to Oscar, Billy, Albie, Daneel and Hollie for doing such a fantastic job.
PSHE
Next week in PSHE, we will be exploring the emotion grief, looking at how it can affect our bodies and how we can recognise and understand these feelings.
Geography
In Geography, the children will learn about recycling plastics in our school and will suggest ways we could improve our recycling practices.
Congratulations
A huge well done to Poppy, our raffle ticket winner this week!
Have a wonderful weekend everyone,
