๐ŸŒŸ Sandymere Class Weekly Round-Up ๐ŸŒŸ

What a wonderful first full week we have had in Year 1! The children have all worked incredibly hard and, although we are feeling rather tired by the end of the week, we are so proud of how well everyone is coping with the transition from Reception to Year 1. It has been lovely to see the children growing in confidence, independence and enthusiasm for learning each day.

๐Ÿ“š English (Drawing Club)
This week we enjoyed the story The Giant Jam Sandwich. We have been focusing on creating writing that can be read by others, thinking carefully about the sounds we can hear in words and how to record them clearly. The children impressed us with their creativity and growing confidence as writers.
๐Ÿ”ท Maths
In maths, we have been exploring 2D shapes and developing our counting skills within 10. We have been identifying different shapes, discussing their properties and practising careful counting.
๐Ÿ”ค Phonics
This week's phonics learning has focused on:
โญ ff
โญ ll
โญ ss
โญ zz
โญ ck
โญ nk
The children have worked hard to read and write words containing these sounds and spelling patterns.
๐Ÿงช Science
In Science, we learned about the difference between an object and a material. We investigated a range of everyday items and discussed what materials they are made from.
๐Ÿ’ป Computing
We explored the question,"What is technology?" The children discovered that technology is something that has been made by people to help us in some way. They enjoyed spotting examples of technology in school and at home.
โœ๏ธ RE
In RE, we began learning about Christianity and considered the question,"What makes me special?" We discussed how Christians believe that all people are special because everyone is unique and different. The children enjoyed sharing the things that make them special.
๐Ÿ PE
We are very lucky to have two sports coaches working with us this half term. Our current focus is on cricket and fundamental movement skills. The children have shown great enthusiasm whilst developing their coordination, balance and teamwork.
๐ŸŽจ Art
In Art, we explored creating spirals using chalk, graphite and pencils. The children experimented with different materials and techniques to create some fantastic artwork.
โœจ Class Worship
Our worship this week focused on letting our light shine through thankfulness. We listened to the story of Abraham and learned how he trusted God and remained thankful. We reflected on ways that we can show gratitude and let our own lights shine brightly.
๐Ÿ”ข Number Sense at Home
In our Number Sense sessions this week, we have been practising recognising and subitising numbers from 6 to 10 using "Five and a Bit" patterns. Please see the attached activities to try at home.

๐Ÿ“Œ Key Reminders
๐Ÿ“š Reading books are coming home on Monday.
๐Ÿ‘Ÿ PE lessons are on Tuesday and Wednesday.
๐ŸŽฝ Please keep PE kits in school all week if possible.

๐ŸŒŸ Thank you for all of your support this week. We are incredibly proud of how hard the children have worked and how well they are settling into Year 1. We are already seeing so many examples of the children embracing new challenges and continuing to Let Your Light Shine! ๐ŸŒŸ
